10 California teams advance to second round of open division qualification for U.S. Open Cup berth

A handful of California teams are one step closer to qualifying for the 2016 U.S. Open Cup.

Earlier this year, U.S. Soccer announced the schedule format for U.S. Open Cup open division qualifying. Twenty teams from California and 36 teams from around the U.S.A. will square off in hopes of securing one of eight open Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup slots.

The first round of open qualification was held this past weekend for the California teams and a few noteworthy teams advanced to the second round of open qualification. Looking to repeat last year’s run that saw upsets over FC Tucson and Arizona United SC, Chula Vista FC defeated Temecula Football Club 5-2. Cal FC advanced after defeating Valley United SC, 4-0, and San Francisco City FC advanced following a 2-0 win over El Farolito.

Other teams who advanced are La Maquina, San Nicolas FC, San Pedro Monsters FC, LA Wolves, Outbreak FC, Real Sociedad, Davis Legacy.

The California teams need a victory in the second round (November 21 and 22) and a victory in the third round (April 1 and 2) of open qualification to advance to the U.S. Open Cup First Round of May 11, 2016.
