FIFA’s official indoor game, the small sided game of Futsal is a new avenue for American soccer players. Played indoors, Futsal is a 5v5 game on a basketball court with a smaller, heavier low bounce ball.
An alternative to traditional indoor soccer where playing off walls are part of the game, Futsal is played with touchline boundaries – so players focus on the same ball control as outdoor soccer.
Although Futsal has just recently boomed in America, is has been around for over fifty years – used as a training method by European soccer powerhouses.
The goal for Rebels Soccer Club located in San Diego, California has always been to focus on player development. Director of Coaching and former futsal player Ryan Marquez and Director of Operations, Abel Martinez knew they needed to implement the game of futsal to maximize this goal.
In 2014, Rebels SC launched Total Futsal, a league available during the off-season (November-January). While most competitive teams typically participate in tournament play during this time, Total Futsal offers teams an advantage… competition AND player development in a relaxing environment – all while having fun.
“Our children love playing futsal,” said Kristey Wimbish, parent of three Total Futsal players. “We have seen many improvements in their game play that has translated to the soccer field. Futsal has been and will continue to be a major part of their overall soccer development.”
“We have been with Total Futsal since it started three years ago. I highly recommend parents look into futsal for their children,” said Jenn Phillips, parent of a 12 year old Total Futsal player who has been playing soccer since the age of 3. “It gives our daughter a nice break from the intense competitive season. It’s all about using your skills and having fun.”
This game is not only a fun way for players to sharpen their skills, but is also opening up new opportunities. Rebel SC’s Elite G2004 player Selena, was selected for US Youth Futsal’s South West Regional Team. Selena then participated in the US Youth Futsal ID Camp in July 2016 in Kansas City, where top players from across the nation were selected to trial for the US Youth Futsal National Team.
