Romario Williams continued his blistering scoring form for club and country, netting the game winner for Jamaica in their 2-1 Gold Cup quarterfinal victory over Canada. It was the second goal of the tournament for Williams, who leads the United Soccer League in scoring for Charleston Battery.

Canada controlled the early going, but a mistake at the back allowed Portland Timbers forward Darren Mattocks to slide the ball to a wide-open Shaun Francis who easily put Jamaica on top.

As the half wore on, Canada pressed with urgency, but was more measured in possession. Jamaica pressured mostly on the break, or with long passes that exploited their pace up front.

Williams would put the game out of reach in just the 50th minute, when he shook defenders in traffic before unleashing a perfect, curling effort to the far upper 90.

Canada’s Junior Hoilett would make the game close with an arching goal of his own in the 61st, but it was too little too late.

Canada’s strong Gold Cup run comes to an end, and Jamaica advances to the semi-finals for the second consecutive tournament. They will face Mexico, who were 1-0 winners over Honduras in the night’s other quarterfinal.
