Not wanting to rest of past accomplishments, the U.S. Women’s National Team capped off an impressive showing in the inaugural SheBelieves Cup with a thrilling, 2-1, come-from-behind victory against Germany on Wednesday night.
Playing against some of the world’s best, the U.S. Women’s National Team defeated FIFA ranked #5 England, 1-0, #3 France, 1-0, and now #2 ranked Germany.
With the Rio Olympics approaching the SheBelieves Cup is viewed as a warm-up for the U.S. Women’s National Team, who will be looking to take home a fourth consecutive gold medal.
Against Germany, the U.S. Women’s National Team saw themselves trailing for the first time this calendar year when Anja Mattag converted a shot through traffic after a poor turnover by the U.S.
That deficit didn’t last long, as Alex Morgan equalized just minutes later. A ball was played over the top and Morgan flicked the ball over the final German defender and volleyed a bouncing screamer into the back of the net. Five minutes after that Samantha Mewis caught a break when her shot took a deflection and knuckled into the net.
Morgan was the tournament’s top scorer with two goals and the U.S. Women outscored their opponents 4-1.
Up next for the U.S. is back-to-back friendlies against Colombia on April 6 in Connecticut and April 10 in Pennsylvania. The first match at the Olympics is August 3.
