The U.S. Women’s National Team quest for a fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal took a step in the right direction following a 2-0 win over New Zealand on Wednesday in its Olympic opener. Carli Lloyd opened up the scoring for the U.S. just nine minutes into the match. Lloyd, who was sandwiched between two New Zealand defenders in the box, redirected a Tobin Heath cross across the face of goal for the opening goal.(SEE GOAL)

California native, Alex Morgan, doubled the U.S. lead just 34 seconds into the second half. After a poor clearance from New Zealand, the U.S. quickly countered and found themselves with a 3 v 2 on the top of the box. A clever combination from Tobin Heath and Brian Morgan Brian sprung Alex Morgan free for an open look at the net. She took two touched before rifling a low screamer into the near post. (SEE GOAL)

The U.S. is tied for the lead in its group with France who thrashed Colombia, 4-0. U.S. will play France on Saturday before finishing up group play against Colombia on Tuesday.
