Today, May 20, Surf Cup Sports released details for Summer Surf Cup Events in 2020. Anticipating a phased re-opening, but with an eye towards health and safety, tournament weekends have been rescheduled and spread across multiple weekends.

Surf Cup Sports said in a statement, “After careful consideration, acknowledgment of the phased re-opening and input from our partners, government officials, and college coaches, the decision has been made to change the dates for our Summer Surf Cup events.”

2020 Dates: Every weekend in August. Increasing from two weekends to four.

Normally, Surf Cup spans two weekends every summer. One for olders, one for youngers. Boys and girls have been split up across two large venues: The SoCal Sports Complex in Oceanside, and Surf Cup Sports Park in Del Mar.

For 2020, Surf Cup will span four weekends instead of two, and only one venue will be used: Surf Cup Sports Park in Del Mar. The olders weekends will span three days. Boys will play Saturday, Sunday, Monday. Girls will play Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

The change will allow for lower numbers of teams and spectators at venues. Organizers will more easily be able to work within the current health and safety guidelines from state and local government.

Here are the play dates:

OLDER BOYS (2006 & OLDER):
August 1 – 3, 2020 (Sat – Mon)
Registration deadline July 1, 2020
Teams will be notified of acceptance by July 6, 2020

OLDER GIRLS (2006 & OLDER)
August 7 – 9, 2020 (Fri – Sun)
Registration deadline July 4, 2020
Teams will be notified of acceptance by July 9, 2020

YOUNGEST BOYS & GIRLS (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013)
August 22 – 23, (Sat and Sun Only)
Registration deadline July 15, 2020
Teams will be notified of acceptance by July 20, 2020

All games will be played at the Surf Cup Sports facility in Del Mar, CA.

No doubt, the venues will have a different look and feel than previous years. Will we see huge crowds in the tunnel and at the food vendors? Perhaps, but probably not.

What if the tournament can’t happen at all?

SoccerNation reached out to Surf Cup Sports to ask what will happen to teams who apply, are accepted, but then the tournament ends up being cancelled because of the pandemic.

Surf Cup Sports told us, “In the event of cancellation due to COVID-19, all registration fees will be issued a full refund minus credit card processing fees. If you were planning to attend Surf Cup 2020, we encourage you to apply as soon as possible!”

Soccer families across the nation are eager to get back on the field. As we learned this week, hopefully practices can resume soon. Then games can potentially follow in the next few months.

Stay safe, stay healthy, and we will see you on the field soon!
