Stanford Advances to Women’s College Cup Quarterfinals

Third round action for the Women’s College Cup is in the books with just one California based school advancing to the quarterfinals. Below are recaps from the third round.

#3 Stanford defeated Arizona 3-0
Stanford scored early and added two late goals in a third round 3-0 win over Arizona.  Junior forward Megan Turner recorded the first goal for Stanford in the 18th minute when she finished off Kyra Carusa’s cross. Stanford held onto the one-goal lead until the 76th minute when junior forward Ryan Walker-Hartshorn came off the bench to score her first goal of the match. Hartshorn then put the match on ice in the 88th minute on her second goal.

Stanford takes on #20 Duke (13-5-4) in the quarterfinals. Duke upset #5 Florida, 2-1, in the third round. The match will be played on Stanford’s campus on Friday at 4:00 p.m. PT.

#4 West Virginia defeated Loyola Marymount 5-2
Loyola Marymount’s (LMU) historic NCAA Tournament run came to an end on Sunday against West Virginia in a 5-2 defeat. Both sides traded goals in the first half with West Virginia, one of the most dominant offenses in the country, scoring in the 16th minute and adding another in the 38th minute. LMU answered both times. The first equalizer in the 25th minute from Raquel Angelone and the second on an own goal in the 40th minute. LMU’s efforts fell short as they were unable to keep pace with West Virginia who added three more goals in the second half. All goals scored were from Kailey Utley in the second half. LMU midfielder Jocelyn Blankenship wrapped up her senior year with a school-record 21 assists.

#1 Virginia defeated #11 USC 2-0
USC’s season came to a close following a 2-0 loss to Virginia. Virginia scored the opening goal in the 42nd minute from Doniak Makenzy and added a late insurance goal in the 80th minute from Alexis Shaffer.
