Phoenix Rising FC announced today that they have hired Patrice Carteron as head coach.

The new coach will step in for interim head coach Rick Schantz next month, possibly as soon as June 5.

Carteron, 46, spent most of his 16-year playing career in Ligue 1 in his native France, logging 100+ appearances each for Stade Rennais and St. Etienne. He has coached professional clubs across France and Africa, and is currently completing his tenure at Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia. Al Nassr finished third in the table this season, and qualified for the Asian Champions League.

In July 2012 he took over as head coach of the Mali Men’s National Team, guiding Les Aigles to their highest-ever FIFA ranking of 23 in June of 2013. For most of his tenure, Mali were ranked higher than the United States.

Rising FC Governor Berke Bakay said in a statement, “Bringing Patrice Carteron to Phoenix Rising FC is another tremendous achievement for professional soccer in the United States. His holistic approach to the game combines a unique blend of strategy, wellness, and uncompromising competitiveness. Patrice will bring the very best performance out of our players and nourish a new soccer culture for youth development in cooperation with our affiliate youth clubs throughout Arizona.”

Notably absent is the title “President of Soccer Operations” which was held by previous Rising head coach Frank Yallop.

“I am very impressed by the project and have a fantastic feeling about the ownership group, coaching staff and new stadium atmosphere,” said Carteron. “My heart told me to pour my efforts into Phoenix Rising.”
