Amid blustery winds and a torrential downpour, New Jersey Copa FC opened its United Women’s Soccer season on May 13th against visiting Rochester Lancers, scoring six goals and conceding none in a one-sided affair. The defending Eastern Conference champions controlled the game and saw five different goal scorers find the back of the net at Saint John Vianney High School in Central Jersey.

Katarina Nilsson earned the Jersey Mike’s Subs New Jersey Copa FC Woman of the Match award, having come into the game as a substitute in the 54th minute and going on to notch two goals from four shots.

Head Coach Roberto Aguas was certainly pleased with the result. “This was certainly a great start to our sophomore season,” said Aguas. “Despite playing in tough conditions in a consistent, heavy rain, we found great rhythm in our play which translated into dominating possession throughout the match. Defensively, we were solid throughout with very few mistakes and those seldom few were mainly caused by the tough conditions. Above all else, our attack continued the same success we found last year. With five different players scoring the six goals, it shows how deep our attack can be. We are excited for this season as the ladies feel they have unfinished business to take care of after losing in the national finals in double overtime last year. We’re back to work this week as we prepare for our match next weekend.”

High Point University commit Lauren Mazich got the ball rolling when she opened the scoring in the 29th minute before Camille Bowen scored scored in the 37th minute to take the score to 2-0 where it would remain until halftime. In the second half, the floodgates opened up as first Jeanine Nunez and the Gianna Smith notched tallies for NJCFC either side of Nilsson’s brace for a final scoreline that read 6-0.

Up next, NJCFC heads to Melville, N.Y. on Saturday, May 20 for a 5 p.m. road match with the Long Island Rough Riders at Cy Donnelly Stadium.
