NC Battalion – San Diego’s Professional Soccer Builds A Grassroots Community

Since their inception, NC Battalion have been establishing lasting relationships with North County, San Diego area youth clubs. In an effort to grow the existing soccer community and expand soccer support in the San Diego region, they are volunteering time to local charity events and programs that give back to society. In early March, San Diego Soccer Club (SDSC) and NC Battalion finalized the details to partner and promote the growth of soccer in our community.

On April 3, NC Battalion will be coming off their season opener at SoCal SC in San Bernardino. A selection of NC Battalion players will join SDSC and volunteer at their first TOPSoccer event for April.

SDSC is a non-profit, youth soccer organization that is compromised of the Penasquitos Youth Soccer Association and FC San Diego. SDSC operates both recreational and competitive leagues in the communities of Rancho Penasquitos, Rancho Bernardo, and 4S Ranch. Like NC Battalion, SDSC seeks to be a meaningful contributor to the community. They organize charity drives and fundraisers that support players, local schools, and parks and recreation departments.

One of the ways that SDSC gives back to the community is their TOPSoccer program. TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) was created to provide a safe and supportive environment for physically and/or developmentally challenged children and young adults who love soccer.

“When you see how a challenged athlete can jump over hurdles, kick a soccer ball into the goal, and celebrate his achievements that moment, you are enriched in witnessing the rare gift of pure joy,” said SDSC coach Oscar Eusebio. SDSC works with athletes ranging from 4 to 22 years old by assigning them a volunteer buddy who can help them learn and play soccer.

This is why NC Battalion, as an organization, chose to participate in the program. “In addition to playing the game, I enjoy getting involved with my community. This program allows me to combine two things that I love: Playing soccer and giving back to the local San Diego kids,” said NC Battalion player Brennan Tennelle.

NC Battalion will begin volunteering with SDSC and their TOPSoccer program this weekend at Penasquitos Creek Park.
