The international break is now over! In case you missed anything from the return of the Liga MX weekend, here’s a quick game-by-game recap of Week 8.

Puebla 0-0 Cruz Azul

So many promising moments in the final third that rarely led to anything truly dangerous in the attack. Once the final whistle blew, both sides finished with only one shot on target each. Despite the draw, Cruz Azul remains in the top eight while also holding on to its undefeated streak in the Apertura.

Goalscorers:

SofaScore man of the match: Adrian Aldrete (Cruz Azul). The left wing-back was a key member of the defense and attack for Cruz Azul. Aldrete also finished with third-highest amount of passes in the game.

Atlas vs Tigres — SUSPENDED

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heXvznWe6hE&w=560&h=315]

Believe it or not, the match was suspended after it was decided that a large display was too close to the field. At time of writing, no exact date is set yet, but early reports state that the rescheduled game will be played in November. Such a weird incident.

Goalscorers:

SofaScore man of the match: Obviously not the person who installed the screen.

Lobos BUAP 1-3 Morelia

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9RQ3sIScl0&w=560&h=315]

Does this result say more about Morelia or Lobos BUAP? Although Morelia is clearly flexing its muscle in recent matches, Lobos BUAP have now earned their fourth loss in their last five games. It’s not the most fair relegation system, but Lobos BUAP must soon start earning much-needed points before they seriously start flirting with a demotion.

Goalscorers: 14’ Raul Ruidiaz (Morelia), 17’ Raul Ruidiaz (Morelia), 31’ Diego Valdes (Morelia), 47’ Luis Advincula (Lobos BUAP).

SofaScore man of the match: Raul Ruidiaz (Morelia). No question here, it has to be Ruidiaz after scoring twice. Can the Peruvian once again clinch another goalscoring title?

Queretaro 1-2 Leon

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRgDRY_REPw&w=560&h=315]

In his first match as manager, Gustavo Diaz helped Leon claim three crucial points on Saturday. As for Queretaro, things are starting to look worrisome for Los Gallos Blancos. Following the loss, Queretaro’s winless streak has now stretched to four games.

Goalscorers: 18’ Elias Hernandez (Leon), 61’ Alexis Perez (Queretaro), 81’ Mauro Boselli (Leon)

SofaScore man of the match: Elias Hernandez (Leon). With a goal and an assist, it’s no wonder that Hernandez was selected as the best. Does a call-up for El Tri await him?

Monterrey 1-0 Necaxa

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-fqMIN5ydE&w=560&h=315]

As expected, Necaxa was going to make it difficult, but it was also going to be nearly impossible to steal a win away from Monterrey. Los Rayados now have more wins, points and goals than any other Liga MX side. With only four goals allowed, the first place team also has the best defense in Apertura.

Goalscorers: 56’ Carlos Sanchez (Monterrey)

SofaScore man of the match: Leonel Vangioni (Monterrey) and Rogelio Funes Mori (Monterrey). I’ll be the tiebreaker here and say that Vangioni deserves the MOTM recognition. The former A.C. Milan player was exciting in his league debut for Monterrey.

Pachuca 1-3 Chivas

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUVEUskRlZs&w=560&h=315]

Pachuca was powerless on Saturday night. After a brilliant start from Chivas in the first half, and terrible defensive mistakes from Los Tuzos, Pachucha entered halftime with a 3-0 deficit. Los Tuzos bounced back in the last 45 minutes but it was too little too late against the current title-holders.

Goalscorers: 16′ Michael Perez (Chivas), 31′ Javier Lopez (Chivas), 36′ Carlos Fierro (Chivas), 67′ Franco Jara (Pachuca).

SofaScore man of the match: Javier Lopez (Chivas). I personally think Michael Perez should be winning this, but that shouldn’t take anything away from Lopez’s superb performance.

Club America 2-0 Veracruz

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93w0x9Id5UI&w=560&h=315]

Who would have guessed that Silvio Romero would be the one to score twice for America over the weekend. Thanks to the striker, who last scored in a league match in April, America has held onto its strong start at second place. As for Veracruz, Los Tiburones Rojos have yet to defeat America at the Estadio Azteca since the 2005 Apertura.

Goalscorers: 6′ Silvio Romero (America), 69′ Silvio Romero (America).

SofaScore man of the match: Silvio Romero (America). Romero was so very close to earning a hat-trick as well.

Pumas 0-2 Club Tijuana

A boring first half which later developed into a fortuitous finish for Xolos. Both sides were generally awful with their finishing, but it was Tijuana who truly capitalized on two pivotal moments in the second half. Following the win, Xolos have now secured their fourth consecutive victory.

Goalscorers: 51′ Gustavo Bou (Tijuana), 93′ Luis Angel Mendoza (Tijuana).

SofaScore man of the match: Damian Perez (Tijuana) and Damian Musto (Tijuana). Two Damians in the chase, but I’m giving this one to Xolos’ leading passer, Musto.

Santos Laguna 0-0 Toluca

Santos were probably a bit too desperate for a goal on Sunday. Of their 24 shots, 16 were audacious attempts from outside of the box. A solid performance from Toluca goalkeeper Luis Garcia helped finish the game off as a scoreless draw. With the away point in hand, Toluca has been able to maintain its spot in the top four of the league table.

Goalscorers:

SofaScore man of the match: Luis Garcia (Toluca). It has to be Garcia. The goalkeeper had a top-notch evening that allowed Toluca to steal an away point.

Goal of the week — Silvio Romero

It’s not just the finish in a tight space from Romero, it’s also the build-up of the play that incorporated quick movement from Diego Lainez and Oribe Peralta. Impressive.
