Major League Soccer announced on Thursday that Landon Donovan will coach the MLS Homegrown team for the second straight year in the third annual Chipotle MLS Homegrown Game on July 17 at Avaya Stadium.

Donovan and more than 20 of the league’s top homegrown talent will face the Mexico U-20 National Team. just one day prior to 2016 AT&T MLS All-Star Game between MLS and Arsenal.

Last year, Donovan’s MLS Homegrown Team played Club America’s U-23 team to a 1-1 draw before losing in penalties.

The Homegrown Team has been a great platform to showcase the league’s up and coming talent in the previous two editions. Past players include: Carlos Salcedo (Real Salt Lake, now with Guadalajara), Harry Shipp (Chicago Fire), Wil Trapp (Columbus Crew), Gyasi Zardes (LA Galaxy), Justen Glad (Real Salt Lake), Jesse Gonzalez (FC Dallas), Erik Palmer-Brown (Sporting Kansas City).

MLS Homegrown Players are a specialized group of players that have been a member of an MLS club’s youth development program for at least one year and have met the necessary training and retention requirements. Players that meet those qualifications can sign a professional contract with the club’s senior team without being subject to the SuperDraft.
