This afternoon legendary Mexican soccer player Hugo Sanchez held a press conference at which he unveiled his plans to build a multi-million dollar soccer specific facility in San Diego. At the press conference, Sanchez cited his longstanding connection to the city of San Diego as a major factor in deciding to build his foundation. Sanchez launched his international career with the fabled San Diego Sockers in 1979. He scored 26 goals in just 32 games in the old NASL before moving to Spain where he played with Atletico Madrid in 1981.

The proposed 80 acre facility, dubbed Hugo Sanchez Soccerland, will include indoor facilities and outdoor fields to allow practices, games and tournaments to be held one place and will accommodate all ages. Additional features will include conference and seminar rooms, classrooms, a library and gymnasium. The newly created soccer fields will serve as the home field site for the Foundation’s own soccer teams and will also be used by other soccer clubs.

The Hugo Sanchez Soccerland Foundation is committed to giving youth the skills, motivation, inspiration and confidence to reach their full potential through soccer. Huge Sanchez is widely regarded as the most successful Mexican soccer player of the modern era. He starred for the Spanish giants Real Madrid and made a reputation for scoring spectacular overhead kicks and volleys. Sanchez makes his home in San Diego and has made it his personal mission to support the development of children and teenagers in San Diego and surrounding areas with his knowledge and expertise about the best methods to teach “the beautiful game.”
