Last month, the U.S. Open Cup qualifying rounds for Chula Vista Futbol Club began and just last weekend, the team traveled to Thousand Oaks, just north of Los Angeles, to meet their next opponent. FC Hasental, an NPSL Southwest Conference team, hosted the young men from Chula Vista, CA and the result favored the visitors.

The team has traveled to Hasental previously so they knew what to expect from the team in orange. “We felt comfortable because our practices have been good and the team is starting to feel very comfortable playing with each other,” mentioned Coach Hector Diaz.

A familiar face for Chula Vista FC, Alberto Diaz was the star of the match. He scored the first goal  for Chula Vista within a minute of kickoff by chipping the keeper from 40 yards out. Chula Vista set the tone early on and Hasental could not recover. Diaz sealed the victory with the fourth goal after FC Hasental shortly scored their first goal of the game.

Chula Vista noted the speed and agility of FC Hasental’s Mario Cruz Macias, “he is very good and moved a lot trying to find a weakness in our team.”

Although both teams was aggressive in creating changes, CVFC created oppportunies that allowed them to capitalize. The young men knew that Hasental would be a tough opponent but they were able to exploit their backline weakness.  After 90 minutes, the final score was 4-1 in favor of the team from South San Diego.

Coach Diaz remains focused on the end goal, “Our goals are pretty lofty, and we have to match the commitment of professionals.” CVFC looks forward to Round 3 of the U.S. Open Cup which will take place in March.  In the meantime, the club is looking forward to adding up to five players to the roster that will improve their chances of qualifying for the main Open Cup tournament.
