California Top 25 College Recap: Stanford, USC, UCLA, Pepperdine Extend Winning Streaks

Time is running out for teams to make their mark. On the men’s side only two teams are ranked in the top 25 while five women’s teams are ranked. Below are recaps and updated rankings from the most recent NSCAA Coaches poll (October 25).

Men’s

#9 Stanford

The Cardinal extended their undefeated streak to seven matches following a 1-1 draw with San Diego State and a 3-2 win over then #24 UCLA. Against San Diego State, the Aztecs scored the opening goal in the 18th minute and Stanford’s Bryce Marion equalized in the 60th minute. Against UCLA, both sides traded goals with UCLA’s Felix Vobejda scoring the opening goal. Stanford’s Drew Skundrich equalized in the 40th minute and Thomas Hilliard-Acre put Stanford up a goal just over a minute later. UCLA bounced back with an equalizer from Brian Iloski in the 59th minute. Stanford then stormed back with Foster Langsdorf’s ninth goal of the season in the 65th minute. Up next for Stanford is Oregon State on Thursday and #16 Washington on Sunday. 

#22 San Diego State 

Solid weekend for San Diego State, as they played #12 Stanford to a 1-1 draw on Thursday and 1-0 win over California on Sunday. Against Stanford, Casey Macias scored the opening goal in the 18th minute while Stanford’s Bryce Marion equalized in the 60th minute. Against Cal, Travis Nicklaw scored the opening goal in the 6th minute and San Diego State held on for the victory. Up next for San Diego State is Oregon State on November 3. 

 

Women’s

#3 Stanford

The Cardinal picked up two victories with 2-0 wins over #22 Colorado on Thursday and Utah on Sunday. Against Colorado, Jordan DiBiasi and Averie Collins scored goals. In the match against Utah, Kyra Carusa and Michelle Xiao scored the goals in the first half. Up next for Stanford is Arizona on Thursday and ASU on Sunday. 

#4 USC

The Trojans continue to pick up the victories with back-to-back wins over Washington State on Thursday and Washington on Sunday. Against WSU, Nicole Molen, Leah Pruitt, and Hailer Hite scored the goals. Against Washington, Alex Anthony scored the lone goal. Up next for USC is Utah on Thursday and Colorado on Sunday. 

 #9 UCLA

Like their crosstown rivals, UCLA defeated both Washington and Washington State. Against Washington, UCLA scored two goals in the opening seven minutes from Jessie Fleming and Amber Munerlyn. Washington cut the lead back to one with a goal in the 8th minute and equalized in the 28th minute. The match then went into overtime, and Fleming scored the match-winning goal in the 96th minute. In the match against Washington State, Courtney Proctor scored the opening goal and Gabbi Miranda scored the match-winner in the 76th minute. Up next for UCLA is Colorado on Thursday and Utah on Sunday. 

#15 Pepperdine

Pepperdine extended their winning streak to six matches following a 2-1 win over Santa Clara and 1-0 win over San Francisco. Against Santa Clara, Pepperdine scored the opening goal in the 19th minute from a Rylee Baisden penalty kick and added another goal in the 53rd minute on Bri Visalli’s fourth goal of the season. The lone goal scored in the San Francisco match was scored by Taylor Alvarado in the 75th minute. Up next for Pepperdine is Loyola Marymount on Sunday. 

#18 California

Tough weekend for California as they played Utah to a 1-1 draw and then suffered a 3-2 overtime loss to Colorado. Against Cal, Ifeoma Onumonu scored the equalizer in the 59th minute. In the match against Colorado, Cal found themselves trailing 2-0 until Maggie Bell cut the lead to one in the 87th minute and Onumonu scored the equalizer in the 88th minute. Colorado scored the game winner in the 109th minute. Up next for California is Arizona State on Thursday and Arizona on Sunday.
