California Top 25 College Recap: Five Women’s Teams Ranked In Top 20

The regular-season has come to a close for the women’s game and the men have just one week left to improve on their College Cup chances. The bracket is out for the Women’s College Cup and we’ll have a full preview for that later this week. Below is the second-to-last poll for the men and the final poll for the women. Below are recaps and updated rankings from the most recent NSCAA Coaches poll (November 1). 

Men’s

#8 Stanford

No matches for Stanford this past week. However that didn’t prevent them from clinching the 2016 Pac-12 title. San Diego State’s win over #1 Washington clinched the third consecutive title for Stanford. Up next for them is California on Friday. 

#16 San Diego State 

The Aztecs picked up a massive victory this past weekend, defeating #11 Washington 1-0 on a last second goal from freshman Pablo Pelaez. He lined up for a free kick and threaded the ball just inside the right post. Up next for San Diego State is UCLA on Thursday. 

Women’s

#2 Stanford (5 first place votes)

In the Cardinal final game, Stanford smashed their rivals California 4-1 with an onslaught of goals in the second half. Michelle Xiao opened up the scoring in the 12th minute. Cal equalized a few minutes later and it wasn’t until the 55th minute when Andi Sullivan scored the go ahead goal. Kyra Carusa and Beattie Goad added late goals as well. Up next for Stanford is Houston Baptist at home in the Women’s College Cup on Friday at 7:00PM.

#7 USC

The Trojans dropped their last match of the season to UCLA. USC held the shot advantage 20-11 however UCLA goalkeeper Teagan Micah saved a total of seven shots to earn the clean sheet. Up next for USC is Eastern Washington at home in the Women’s College Cup on Saturday at 1:00PM. 

 #18 UCLA

The Bruins picked up a much needed victory over USC, 1-0, in the regular season finale. It ended a two-match losing streak. Annie Alvarado scored what would be the match-winning goal in the 26th minute. UCLA goalkeeper Teagan Micah saved a total of seven shots to earn the clean sheet. Up next for UCLA is Seattle at home in the Women’s College Cup  on Friday at 7:00PM. 

#19 Pepperdine

Pepperdine ended their regular season with a 1-0 win over Pacific. Bri Visalli scored the game winning goal in the 82nd minute. Up next for Pepperdine is California at home  in the Women’s College Cup  on Saturday at 1:00PM. 

#24 California

The last few weeks haven’t been as kind to Cal as they’d like. In their regular-season finale, they suffered a 1-4 loss to Stanford. In their past five matches they have won one, played to one draw, and suffered three losses. Against Stanford, Arielle Ship scored her 10th goal of the season. Up next for California is a road match against Pepperdine  in the Women’s College Cup  on on Saturday at 1:00PM
