This years edition of FIFA is coming out soon and thousands of people are excited for it to be released! Many people spend hours a day playing the game, trying to rank among the best in the world. With the newest edition coming out soon, EA has started releasing more information about the game. Recently, they unveiled their new cover. California Homegrown Alex Morgan, who is a USWNT forward and one of the main stars on the squad that won the 2015 FIFA World Cup will be the female ever featured on the cover of an EA Sports FIFA video game in the United States. The FIFA 16 will be the first edition in history to include women’s teams.

[quote_box_center]“It is an incredible honor to be one of the first women featured on the cover of EA SPORTS FIFA,” Morgan said in a statement. “I know people all over the world play this game and I’m really excited that FIFA 16 is putting such an important spotlight on women’s soccer. And now to share the cover with today’s greatest player is surreal.” [/quote_box_center]

EA Sports, the creators of the game, said that there would be 12 women’s national teams in this new edition, also causing the expectation for a female player to be on the cover of the game. Messi has a contract with EA Sports as the “global cover athlete” and therefore he will always be on the cover. However, EA also has “regional cover athletes” who join Messi on the cover. With the popularity and hype around the Women’s World Cup last summer, this seemed like a great opportunity to have a female player on the cover.

Reports have said that Alex Morgan had been chosen before the World Cup, so even though Carli Lloyd was the player of the tournament, with the hat trick in the final match, the decision was made way before that. Morgan had also been dealing with injuries 2 years prior to the tournament, so we knew she probably wouldn’t be the best player out there, but because she was the most visible player for the U.S. with endorsements and marketing campaigns, EA decided to go with her anyways.

Morgan will be the female on the cover in the U.S., Christine Sinclair in Canada and Stephanie Catley in Australia. These 3 players will be the first women on the cover of FIFA video game in the world.
