Andrea Rodebaugh is Girls Director of Academy for Xolos in Southern California

Youth Soccer News: Xoloitzcuintles and Barca FC Academy Continue to Grow

The partnership between Barca FC Academy (Temecula and Chula Vista) and Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente (Xolos) continues to grow and develop to the benefit of youth players in Southern California. From April 30 through May 4 the clubs will hold tryouts for boys and girls between ages 15 and 19 as teams continue to be filled. Players will have the opportunity to be tested with the technical staff, which includes Andrea Rodebaugh, Girls Director of Academy for Xolos in Southern California, and Rene Ortiz, Boys Director of Academy.

Xolos and Barca began their partnership in order to expand the opportunities for youth players in Southern California. Through this association, players have access to training and play in both the United States and Mexico. The goal is to help develop top candidates to go on to higher levels in either country.

Rodebaugh is no stranger to international competition, having been Captain of the Mexican Women’s National Team that participated in the qualifying rounds of CONCACAF in Montreal, Canada, in 1994 and Toronto, Canada, in 1998. She was also team captain when Mexico participated in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup in the United States.

In addition to her time with the Mexican National Team, Rodebaugh played with JSF Poissy in France and collegiately for the University of California, Berkeley. Professionally she has played with Shidax of Tokyo. Currently she is an instructor and consultant for the FIFA – Women’s Soccer Development and a Technical Director for the Mexican U-20 Women’s National Team.

Ortiz has played professionally both indoor and outdoor, spending time with the San Diego Sockers in the 1990s and having a short trial with Dallas Burn (now FC Dallas) in the inaugural MLS season. He also played locally with San Diego Nomads of the Western Soccer Alliance, helping the team to the 1989 and 1990 WSL Championships. Internationally, Ortiz played with the U.S. National Futsal Team and the U.S. National Beach Soccer Team.

As a coach, Ortiz has worked with club, high school, and adult teams. He has coached at Southwestern High School, El Cajon Valley High School and Marian Catholic High School in the San Diego area, and is currently head coach for the girls’ varsity team at Hilltop High School. In 2002 Ortiz was named as coach of the Mexican National Futsal Team and is head coach for the Mexican National Indoor Soccer Team (Federación Mexicana de Futbol Rápido).
