Great Soccer Talent to Play for Chicago Red Starts as the First WPSL Elite Season Prepares to Launch
The Chicago Red Stars have announced the signings of Lauren Fowlkes, Alyssa Mautz, and Michelle Wenino for the 2012 season. All three players bring additional professional playing experience to the Red Stars roster.
Lauren Fowlkes, a 23 year-old versatile defender/midfielder from Lee’s Summit, MO, was selected 5th overall in the 2011 Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) draft by the Philadelphia Independence. She was a co-captain at Notre Dame, winning the 2010 NCAA College Cup, and has spent time with the US U20 and U23 Women’s National Teams.
“When I spoke with Arnim Whisler, Red Stars Owner about the organization I was very impressed with his philosophy for the team and passion for the game,” remarked Fowlkes. “I am also a Midwest girl at heart, so playing in the Chicago area was a perfect fit for me, as it will give my family and friends a chance to watch me play again. I expect to be a part of the highest level of women's soccer in the United States and am looking forward to a wonderful season.”
Alyssa Mautz, a 22 year-old forward from St. Louis, MO, was drafted by Sky Blue FC in the 2011 WPS draft. After spending her freshman year at Saint Louis University, she transferred to Texas A&M, where she received All-Big 12 honors. She has also spent time with the US U20 and U23 National Teams.
“I am so excited to have joined the Chicago Red Stars and have great expectations with this club,” said Mautz. “I hope to not only help the team get back to the championship match this year, but this time to win it!”
Michelle Wenino, a 24 year-old defender from Aurora, CO, will be another familiar name for Red Stars fans. She was drafted by Chicago WPS in 2010, where she played a year before later joining Sky Blue FC. She is a graduate of the University of Colorado where she was a Big 12 standout.
“The Red Stars gave me my first playing opportunity out of college and Chicago has been my home in the off-season ever since,” stated Wenino. “I love the atmosphere and all the fan support that Chicago offers. I’m so blessed to be able to wear a Red Stars jersey again.”
The Red Stars are hosting an open tryout the weekend of March 31/April 1 to be held at the Benedictine Sportsplex on the campus of Benedictine University in Lisle, IL. Registration is $75 and players can sign up at redstarsgear.com/tryouts2012.
