Ann Marie Tangorra from Cal State Fullerton scored a Hat Trick

Big West 2011 BIG WEST WOMEN’S SOCCER UPDATE

Big West Conference update for Week 6: Monday, September 19, 2011

Ann Marie Tangorra, Cal State Fullerton Junior • Forward • Arcadia, Calif./Cal State Los Angeles

A hat trick from Ann Marie Tangorra provided the muscle Cal State Fullerton needed to claim the UNM Nike Classic title, earning the junior Big West Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Tangorra had a foot in four of the seven goals the Titans scored in wins against host New Mexico (3-2 in OT) and North Texas (4-1). She assisted on CSF’s first goal to tie the score at 1-1 against the Lobos on Friday.

In Sunday’s triumph against North Texas, Tangorra erupted for her first three collegiate goals in a span of four minutes. She netted her first goal in the 28th minute, added another less than a minute later, and topped off the festivities with her third strike in the 32nd minute. Tangorra notched CSF’s first hat trick since Brianna Buffington accomplished the beat against UC Irvine in 2006.

Brooke Gauvin, Cal Poly Senior • Goalkeeper • Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS

Solid goaltending from senior Brooke Gauvin helped Cal Poly forge a tie with a top 10 program and led to her selection as Big West Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.

Gauvin faced 22 shots and made 10 saves in the Mustangs’ 1-1 double overtime draw against No. 9 Pep- perdine on Sunday.

She also made two saves in Cal Poly’s 4-1 victory against Nevada on Friday. For the week, Gauvin posted a 0.90 goals against average and an .857 save percentage.

Keep An Eye On

Nicole Hubbard, Long Beach State

The senior racked up her first career hat trick and the sixth in Long Beach State history as the 49ers enjoyed an offensive parade in a 6-0 whitewashing of Saint Mary’s on Sunday. Those were the first goals for Hubbard since Aug. 21 when she scored against Sacramento State. Hubbard now owns 13 career goals, which is one shy from entering the LBSU career top 10, and ranks fifth among active Big West players.

More Notables

Coaches Tab UC Irvine As Favorite To Win 2011 Title

The nine head coaches selected UC Irvine to win the 2011 Big West women’s soccer title in their annual preseason poll. The Anteaters collected seven of the nine first-place votes, with Pacific and Cal Poly receiving one first-place vote apiece. UC Irvine garnered 78 total points, followed by Long Beach State with 70. The coaches predicted a logjam in the middle of the pack as only eight points separated third through sixth place. Cal State Northridge was picked to finish third with 52 points, while Pacific was fourth with 51 points. UC Santa Barbara finished with 48 points for fifth place and Cal Poly was sixth with 44 points. Cal State Fullerton (34 points), UC Davis (18) and UC Riverside (10) rounded out the poll. UC Irvine returns seven starters from the 2010 squad that finished 19-3-2 overall and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Figueroa, Gordon Join Select Big West Company

Pacific senior Angelica Figueroa and Long Beach State senior Shawna Gordon reached personal milestones this past weekend after both amassed career assist No. 20. Figueroa notched her 20th in the Tigers’ 3-0 win at Arizona on Friday. Gordon took flight up the charts in LBSU’s 6-0 shutout of Saint Mary’s on Sunday. In that game, she notched four assists to go along with a goal. Figueroa and Gordon are now tied for seventh all-time on the Big West career assists list, and become the ninth and 10th players to have amassed 20 assists.

Titanic Rampage

Cal State Fullerton opened up the scoring floodgates on a pair of unsuspecting opponents at the UNM Nike Classic last weekend. The Titans entered the tournament having scored just six goals as a team through the opening seven matches of the season. By tournament’s end, Fullerton had added seven more goals to the total. The Titans defeated host New Mexico (3-2 in overtime) and North Texas (4-1) to more than double their season scoring output in just two matches. CSF extended its winning streak to three straight matches – the longest since opening the 2008 campaign with four wins in a row.

Fullerton Fun Facts Sponsored By Overtime

Fullerton’s overtime matches against Columbia and New Mexico marked the 13th time in school history that the Titans have played extra time in back-to-back matches, but the first time that they have won both contests. The Titans defeated Columbia 1-0 on Sept. 11 and New Mexico last Friday. CSF, which already has played five overtime matches this season, is on pace to break the record of eight set in 2007. In fact, the Titans have been embroiled in some sort of OT epidemic, having played bonus soccer six times as well in 2009.

Mustangs Extend Unbeaten Streak To Four

Cal Poly is playing solid soccer as conference play looms on the horizon. The Mustangs extended their winning streak to three straight with a 4-1 victory against Nevada on Friday, and ran their unbeaten string to four after tying then-No. 9 Pepperdine 1-1 in double overtime on Sunday. Cal Poly continues a five-match homestand this week with its final non-conference tuneup against Fresno State.

Shutout Streak Good While It Lasted

A 3-0 blanking of host Arizona at the Lowe’s Ventana Resort Cats Classic marked the fourth consecutive shutout win for Pacific. The Tigers outscored those four opponents – Sacramento State, UNLV, Cal State Bakersfield and Arizona – by a combined count of 12-0 before seeing the streak halted by Arizona State. The Sun Devils handed the Tigers a 1-0 defeat on Sunday. Pacific had not allowed a goal in 530:36 before the Sun Devils notched the game-winner at the 85:44 mark. The Tigers have posted five victories by shutout to lead all Big West schools.

Non-Conference Home Stretch

The Big West enters the final week of non-conference play before league action begins on Friday, Sept. 30. A total of 13 matches are on tap this week, including Big West pre-season favorite UC Irvine hosting West Coast Conference favorite Portland on Thursday. The Pilots are unranked but started out the season in the top 10. Cal State Northridge also gets a crack at Portland on Sunday. This is the second straight season the Matadors have hosted the Pilots.

Wavomba Moving Up Tiger Record Book

Pacific senior Kristina Wavomba earned Offensive MVP honors of the Lowe’s Ventana Resort Cats Classic hosted by Arizona last week. The forward scored a pair of goals in the Tigers’ 3-0 win over the hosts, increasing her career total to 21. She became just the seventh Tiger to score 20 or more career goals. Wavomba sits in fourth place at Pacific all-time. With 11 assists, Wavomba’s career point total is 53, which places her just one back of current assistant coach Carmen Padilla for fourth place. Padilla played for the Tigers from 2003-06.

Don’t Want To Go There

With losses to No. 2 Stanford and Saint Mary’s, UC Irvine is looking to avoid its first three-match losing streak since the 2008 season when it hosts Portland on Thursday.

Gordon’s Offensive Outburst

Shawna Gordon’s four assists against Saint Mary’s marked the second-most by a player in Big West single-game history. Lisa Whitfield of North Texas had five assists against Northwestern State on Sept. 21, 1996, the inaugural year of Big West women’s soccer. Thanks to Gordon’s contributions, Long Beach State’s 6-0 win represented the largest margin of victory since the program was reinstated in 1998.

Eight Probably Isn’t Enough

Long Beach State junior Nadia Link also joined in on the fun last week. She contributed to 49er wins against San Diego and Saint Mary’s with a goal in each game, giving her eight for the season. Link already has tied her goals output from 2010, and has exceeded her point total (17). She currently leads the Big West with 20 points.
