Women's Soccer News: Western New York Flash Sign Katherine Reynolds to NWSL Roster
Fan favorite returns as Flash seek inaugural National Women’s Soccer League title
The Western New York Flash have announced the signing of defender Katherine Reynolds, a former Santa Clara University and United States U23 Women’s National Team player, to their 2013 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) roster. Reynolds most recently played for the German club, SC Freiburg.
Reynolds returns to the Flash after being a key member of the 2012 Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) Elite Championship team. Last season, in the WPSL Elite Championship game, the defender netted a key goal in the penalty shootout. That goal helped lead the Flash to their third-consecutive championship, following wins in the W-League and Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS). Reynolds will look to lead the Flash to their fourth straight title as the team opens NWSL play on April 14 at 6:00 p.m. against Sky Blue FC.
Last year, Flash head coach Aaran Lines helped Reynolds sign with SC Freiburg in Germany.
“I’m very excited to have Reynolds back with us for her second stint at the club, after gaining valuable experience with SC Freiburg in the German Bundesliga,” Lines said. “She was instrumental in our success last season, and I expect her to play a big role for us at outside back again.”
Reynolds, 25, made 67 appearances at Santa Clara from 2006-2009. The former Bronco was named to the M.A.C Hermann Trophy watch list and started in all 22 games in her senior year. In her junior year she was acknowledged as Team Tri-Captain and earned All-WCC Second Team honors,. In 2009, Reynolds received NSCAA All-West Region Second Team recognition and was named to both the WCC Preseason All-Conference Team and the All-WCC Academic Team.
Katherine was a member of the U.S. U23 Women’s National Team beginning in 2007. After playing three years with the Seattle Sounders Women in the W-League, where she made 18 appearances and scored three goals, she entered the WPS. The Washington native was a fourth round selection in the 2010 WPS Draft, taken with the Boston Breaker’s fifth pick. That same year, Katherine joined the Philadelphia Independence before playing for the Atlanta Beat in 2011.
