The U.S.-Costa Rica matchup takes place in the hometown of star striker Abby Wambach, the second-leading scorer in the women’s game with 141 career international goals. She has scored three times in three matches so far at the 2012 London Olympics.

The USA qualified for the 2012 Olympic quarterfinal by virtue of a 3-0 victory against Colombia on Saturday, July 28, at Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland. The squad then won Group G with nine points, going 3-0-0 in Olympic group play for the first time. Following the Colombia win and its Olympic-opening 4-2 victory against France on July 25, the U.S. defeated Korea DPR 1-0 at famed Old Trafford, home of Manchester United.

With their win in Group G, the U.S. will face New Zealand on Friday, Aug. 3, at St. James’ Park in Newcastle, England. That match will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network.

The USA’s first match after the 2004 Olympics also took place in Rochester, a 4-3 victory against Iceland on Sept. 25 at Frontier Field. Wambach dazzled her hometown fans with the game’s first two goals and assisted a Mia Hamm tally.
