U.S. Soccer News: THIRD ROUND OF 2011 LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP SET AS SECOND ROUND CONCLUDES

No Surprises as USL PRO Teams Dominate Second Round of 20. Six USL PRO Teams and Two PDL Teams Advance to Face MLS in Third Round; Potential Quarterfinal Hosts Announced

Six USL PRO teams and two PDL teams advanced to the third round of the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as the second round concluded this afternoon.

USL PRO teams dominated the second round of the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, with six teams advancing to the third round. The Chicago Fire PDL at Madison 56ers game was rescheduled for Wednesday, June 22, at 4 p.m. CT due to lightning. The Kitsap Pumas was the only PDL team to advance after tonight’s games.

The six USL PRO teams to advance are FC New York, Rochester Rhinos, Richmond Kickers, Wilmington Hammerheads, Orlando City Soccer Club and Los Angeles Blues.

One game went into extra time and one was concluded by penalty kicks, with the Wilmington Hammerheads and FC New York coming out on top. The Hammerheads came back from a 2-0 deficit against the Charlotte Eagles to send the game into overtime. The Hammerheads scored 13 minutes into extra time to dodge the loss. FC New York defeated the N.Y. Pancyprian Freedoms in penalty kicks after 120 scoreless minutes.

The eight winners from the second round will advance to the third round and face one of eight MLS teams. The third round kicks off on Tuesday, June 28 and Wednesday, June 29.

The six USL PRO teams to advance are FC New York, Rochester Rhinos, Richmond Kickers, Wilmington Hammerheads, Orlando City Soccer Club and Los Angeles Blues. The Kitsap Pumas and Chicago Fire PDL are the only two PDL teams to advance. Chicago Fire PDL defeated the Madison 56ers in a match that was rescheduled for today due to weather on Tuesday.

2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Second Round Results:

17.       FC New York (USL PRO) 0 at N.Y. Pancyprian Freedoms (USASA) 0

The two teams ended regulation scoreless, with FC New York playing down a player after receiving a red card in the 22nd minute. The game was still scoreless after extra time and headed into penalty kicks. After seven rounds, FC New York downed the Freedoms 6-5.

18.      Rochester Rhinos (USL PRO) 1 at Harrisburg City Islanders (USL PRO) 0

The match appeared to be headed into extra time before the Rhinos earned a penalty kick. Tony Donatelli converted the penalty kick in the 90th minute for the game-winner.

19.      Pittsburgh Riverhounds (USL PRO) 1 at Richmond Kickers (USL PRO) 4

The Kickers got on the board in the 17th minute with a goal by David Bulow on a cross by Edson Elcock. In the 30th minute, the Riverhounds tied it up off a header by Chad Severs. Eleven minutes later, Bulow scored his second goal for the Kickers to take the 2-1 lead. Matthew Delicate added two goals in the 52nd and 81st minutes to guarantee the Kickers’ place in the third round.

20.      Charlotte Eagles (USL PRO) 2 at Wilmington Hammerheads (USL PRO) 3

The Eagles drew first blood, with Weston Roberts scoring in the 44th minute and sending the game 1-0 into the half. Daren Toby doubled the lead, scoring in the 54th minute for Charlotte. Andryi Budnyy answered for the Hammerheads and put them on the board in the 63rd minute. Chris Banks scored the equalizer in the 78th minute to send the game into extra time. In the 103rd minute, Luke Mullholland scored the game-winner and cemented the come-from-behind win for the Hammerheads. 

21.      Orlando City Soccer Club (USL PRO) 1 at Charleston Battery (USL PRO) 0

Rob Valentino scored the lone goal of the game in the 39th minute for Orlando City, providing the 1-0 win.

22.       Chicago Fire PDL (PDL) 2 at Madison 56ers (NPSL) 0

Due to lightning, the match was rescheduled for Wednesday, June 22, at 4 p.m. CT. In the first half, the Fire had the advantage but was unable to convert. In the second half, the Fire scored two quick goals with Andrew Ribeiro opening the scoring in the 64thminute and Thierry Zahui doubling the score two minutes later to secure the 2-0 win.

23.      Real Colorado Foxes (PDL) 1 at Kitsap Pumas (PDL) 3

The Pumas struck first with a goal by Cameron Hepple in the 17th minute. The Pumas then gave up an own goal in the 23rd minute to tie the game. In the 43rd minute, Robbie Christner scored for the Pumas to send the game 2-1 into the half. Christner scored his second goal of the game in the 88th minute to guarantee the Pumas the 3-1 win.

24.      Los Angeles Blues (USL PRO) 1 at Ventura County Fusion (PDL) 0

After a nearly scoreless first half, Israel Sesay scored the first and lone goal of the game in the 45th minute. Sesay’s goal was all that was needed to give the Los Angeles Blues the 1-0 win.
