Youth Soccer UPDATE: 2012 US Youth Soccer Region IV Champions
Winners were crowned 2012 US Youth Soccer Region IV Champions today and the Under-14 through Under-19 champions have earned a berth to the US Youth Soccer National Championships, presented by the National Guard, July 23-29 in Rock Hill, S.C., at Manchester Meadows.
The National Guard's partnership with US Youth Soccer is focused on enriching the soccer experience by positively influencing players and coaches in areas of leadership and character development while adding a strong presence of American pride.
West Coast FC of Southern California played for three titles today, winning two, and the Under-13 Girls were victorious on penalty kicks versus Downtown LVSC 99 Gold (NV).
"Obviously, the competition was great," said West Coast Head Coach Doug Swanson. "It’s the grandeur of the event, if you want, with all the setup and the attention. It’s a huge thing for (the players) to adjust to. Being away from home for a week, away from the comfort of their bed, having a set schedule and just having the discipline of being prepared in every way and to compete in big, meaningful games is huge soccer-wise, but huge for their character as well."
The Under-17 Boys champion, Sereno 95 White (AZ), earned their title as they defeated Eastside FC 94 Red (WA), Boise Nationals Premier (ID) and today Mt. Hamilton PAC Tigres (CA-N), the only teams to reach the final in the past two years, en route to the crown.
"It’s a great feeling to come out on top of an event like this, today’s game was very hard fought. Tigres are a good team and they beat us pretty soundly at the beginning of the year, so today the guys had to work really hard and they did," said Sereno 95 coach Brian O’Donnell.

"I think playing in the Regional Championships helps with their focus. They have to understand that each and every game is of significance when you get to this point and there are no easy games, no easy minute in any game, and the kids really have to stay focused and keep their concentration. I think that’s a big lesson for them to learn as they go onto college."
Defending National Champion Fullerton Rangers 96 White (CA-S) repeated as the Under-15 Boys champion today, and the team is anxious to get back to the National Championships to compete for another title.
"I’m speechless to think that we’re going to another National Championship," said Rangers Director of Coaching Jimmy Obleda. "I think it’s the whole experience. The US Youth Soccer National Championship is the pinnacle, that’s what everybody wants to win. When we went last year, everything from the whole experience, to the luncheon, to the games, to the press, to the coaches and U.S. National Team staff, just the whole environment you can’t put words to it. And again, you’re playing for a national championship, to be the best in the country."

Notes from matches…
Under-19 Girls So Cal Blues Dodge (CA-S) returned for their final year together to capture their second Region IV title and make their fourth trip to the National Championships. Blues were national finalists in 2008 after qualifying through the National League, won the 2009 Region IV Championship and then claimed the national title in 2010 as a National League representative. Today, Blue upended Pride Predators 93 (CO) quest to capture the club’s first Region IV crown 3-1. Autumn Altamirano carried Blues with a hatrick, setting the tone with a 4th minute goal. Altamirano doubled the lead in the 36th, but Pride pulled back in with a 75th minute goal from Carly Bolyard. With Pride chasing the game, Altamirano booked Blues’ trip to South Carolina with her third five minutes from time.
Under-18 Girls Two-time National League competitor LaRoca PT (UT) overcame an early one goal deficit to Far West Regional League champ Beach FC 93 Arrache (CA-S) to claim the U-18 Girls championship 2-1. Tina Yeghiayan gave Beach the lead just five minutes into the match, but Stacy Bair equalized for LaRoca for a 1-1 game at halftime. LaRoca went ahead for good just two minutes after the restart thanks to Mackenzie Harrison and the defense held on for the title.
Under-17 Girls Legends Breakaway (CA-S) will play for the treble in South Carolina as National League champions and now Region IV champions, holding off Central Valley Chilipeppers (CA-N) 1-0. Due to Breakaway representing the National League next month, Chilipeppers will advance to the National Championships from Region IV. Nicolette Martino stepped up for Breakaway to score the game winning goal two minutes into the second half and the defense completed their second straight shutout.
Under-16 Girls Far West Regional League champ MVLA Lightning (CA-N) is back in the National Championships after claiming the Under-14 crown in 2010, prevailing over Sereno 96 White North (AZ) in penalty kicks after a scoreless regulation and two overtime periods. MVLA is no stranger to championship shootout victories, as they knocked off Sting 96 (N-TX) for the national title in 2010 from penalty kicks after a 0-0 game.
Under-15 Girls MVLA Mercury Black (CA-N) overcame all odds to give the club two titles on the day. Mercury qualified for the Region IV Championships as the Cal-North wildcard and finished second in Pool C to move onto the quarterfinals, but reeled off three shutouts in the knockout rounds to advance to Nationals. Pride Predators 97 (CO) also had a chance to take home the club’s first Regional title, but Mercury’s Erica Higa netted in the 11th minute and the MVLA defense continued their streak without conceding to claim Region IV.
Under-14 Girls Also carrying the flag for solid defense was Beach FC 97 (CA-S), Far West Regional League champions, as they gave up just one goal in their run to the U-14 Girls Region IV Championship. Savannah DeMelo scored the lone goal of the game for Beach in just the 4th minute, and the Beach backline improved their shutout streak to five games.
Under-13 Girls A defensive stalemate for most of the game turned into late drama in overtime as West Coast FC (CA-S) took the championship after a shootout victory over Downtown LVSC 99 Gold (NV) in the U-13 Girls. Kimberly Flores gave West Coast the lead in the second overtime period, but Jadyn Nogues leveled for Downtown a minute later to send the game to penalty kicks, where West Coast prevailed 4-3.
Under-12 Girls Two teams from the state of Utah scathed regional competition for a rematch of the Utah State Championship game and Sparta United 99 Premier avenged their loss in that game by defeating La Roca Premier PO 1-0. Brecken Mozingo scored the game winner for Sparta and the defense did the rest for their third straight 1-0 victory.
Under-19 Boys West Coast FC (CA-S) will make their third trip to the National Championships looking to win the ultimate title in their last year of youth soccer after they defeated Sereno 93 White (AZ) 2-0. West Coast made their first trip to Nationals as U-14’s in 2007, falling to the Baltimore Bays (MD) in the title game, and returned in 2010 but missed out on the championship game. Juan Mendoza scored the match winner seven minutes into the second half and Cameron Iwasa gave West Coast some security with a 76th minute strike to lead WCFC to South Carolina.
Under-18 Boys Players SC 94 (NV) have been knocking on the door of a Region IV Championship for years, but things finally fell into place in 2012 as Players avenged an opening day loss to Westside Metros Premier (OR) in the final to win the state of Nevada its first ever Region IV title. One goal is all it would take and Eric Guzman stepped up to deliver in the 67th minute as Westside failed to breakdown Players’ defense.
Under-17 Boys Following a seven goal win on opening day, Far West Regional League representative Sereno 95 White (AZ) pulled off five straight one-goal victories en route to a Region IV Championship, which included three wins over each finalist from the past two years; Eastside FC (WA), Boise Nationals (ID) and today Mt. Hamilton PAC Tigres (CA-N) in a shootout. Sereno took the lead versus Tigres with a 51st minute goal from Luis Manta, but Tigres leveled three minutes later through Lorenzo Vazquez. Riding the momentum of a loud hometown crowd, Sereno again took the lead five minutes into overtime from Sergio Rizo, but once again Tigres pulled it back from Edwin Luna five minutes later. Sereno would not be denied however as they converted all four penalties while Tigres could only convert one to send Sereno onto Nationals.
Under-16 Boys Arsenal FC Lucey (CA-S) will shoot for the club’s fifth National Championship after they avenged a state finals loss against West Coast FC (CA-S) in the Regional final. West Coast took the early momentum when Nathan Chow struck in the 7th minute, but Arsenal stepped up five minutes later through Brayan Vargas to even the score. Arsenal assumed the lead midway through the second half on a goal from Carlos Chagolla and held onto the lead as time expired.
Under-15 Boys Fullerton Rangers 96 White (CA-S) continue to set the pace in the U-15 Boys as they have captured back-to-back Dallas Cup and Region IV championships on their way to defend their 2011 National title. Washington Premier FC 96 Black came back from an opening day loss to Rangers with an idea of how to stop the title holders in the final, but Robert Coronado’s first time strike from 22 yards out in the 35th minute would not be denied. Goalkeeper Keith Murphy and the Rangers defense let up one goal in six games heading back to the national stage.
Under-14 Boys Santa Barbara SC White won their second Regional crown in three years and will make their first appearance at the National Championships after defeating Juventus Heat (CA-N) in the U-14 final. Santa Barbara won all six games in the week by one goal, including five by a 1-0 score line. Brandon Sanchez propelled his team with a goal in the 25th minute as the Californians have proven to be a determined side heading to South Carolina.
Under-13 Boys Banat 99 Gold (AZ) was the only team to score on United FC Gold 98 (CA-S) heading into the final game, as the two tied 1-1 in pool play. However, United would revert back to their stingy ways as they turned in a 2-0 victory over Banat for the championship. Marc Bermudez netted the winning goal in the 18th minute and Kalani Cummins secured the win with a strike ten minutes later as the defense held strong once again.
Under-12 Boys Los Angeles area squads Pateadores LA and LA Galaxy Academy can’t seem to avoid each other as they met in the Cal-South state final, Regional Championship pool play and now again in the Regional title game. Galaxy came out on top in the state championship, however Pateadores earned their second victory over their rivals this week after a penalty shootout. The game ended 1-1 after Isacc Soria grabbed the lead for Pats in the 6th minute and Sergio Flores leveled for Galaxy in the 60th, but Pats would take the trophy with a 3-2 score in penalties. In a fantastic display of development and sportsmanship, the two sides met at half-field after the game for a group cheer and sign of respect for their opponent.
The US Youth Soccer National Championships will consist of US Youth Soccer Regional Champions in the Under-14 through Under-19 Boys and Girls age groups as well as the US Youth Soccer National League qualifiers in the Under-15 through Under-17 Boys and Girls age groups to complete the field of 60 teams.
Prior Update:
Finals Matchups Set at the 2012 US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships
Teams have earned their place in the final matches at the 2012 US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships, presented by the National Guard in Phoenix, Ariz. The winners of tomorrow’s games will be crowned the best in the West, and the Under-14 through Under-19 age groups qualify for the US Youth Soccer National Championships July 23-29 at the Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, S.C.
The National Guard's partnership with US Youth Soccer is focused on enriching the soccer experience by positively influencing players and coaches in areas of leadership and character development while adding a strong presence of American pride.
The Regional Championships carry a tradition as a proving ground for the top teams from each state and the US Youth Soccer Regional Leagues, as every team must earn their place. That level of competition was on display in the semifinals as the Under-17 Boys Albion White (CA-S) saw their hopes to return to the National Championship game for the third straight year dashed in a shootout loss to Mt. Hamilton PAC Tigres (CA-N), who will play for a Regional title for the third straight year.
Defending National Champion and back-to-back Dallas Cup champion Fullerton Rangers White (CA-S) were forced into double overtime before a last minute penalty kick against Las Vegas Sports Academy (NV) kept their hopes alive to return to the national stage in the Under-15 Boys.
The Under-12 Girls final will feature a rare matchup as La Roca Premier PO, Utah state champs, and Sparta United 99 Premier, Utah state runners-up, defeated the Cal-South and Washington champions to earn a rematch in the Region IV final.
"The competition has been really tough. Our bracket was really hard, it’s been phenomenal. Today was a really tough game, a phenomenal team from Washington, and they were really hard to control in the back," said La Roca head coach Pancho Ovalle. "To make the final for us is a dream, but I don’t think we’ll be an easy team to play. With our chemistry, it’s really hard to destroy."
West Coast FC (CA-S) Under-16 Boys have made a name for themselves lately, having won the US Youth Soccer Far West Regional League Fall season and the Cal-South state championship. After coming out on top of their pool with a win and two draws, Coach Neil Armour thinks his team is battle tested to make a run for the championship.
"Today’s game, the first half, that was probably the best we’ve played in the whole tournament. We scored some fantastic goals, we went up 3-0 by halftime, and the boys did amazingly well," said Armour. "Being here this week, the fields have been fantastic, a little warm for this Scottish guy, but everything has been fantastic."
West Coast FC boasts one national championship, the Under-14 Boys in 2009, but they’d like nothing more than to get their second in 2012 as they will play for the U-13 Girls and the U-16 and U-19 Boys titles.
"For our boys, we qualified way back in November through the Far West Regional League even though we also won the Southern California State Cup, so these guys have been preparing for a long time. I think the boys are starting to peak at the right time and today’s game was a tough game, Heat is a good team, but in the first half I think we probably played the best we have in the whole tournament. We played really well," said Armour. "For these boys, I think it’d mean the world to them (to win a regional championship). The club has won one national title, but several teams have been to the National Championships, so I think with everybody connected with the club, me included, it would be a fantastic achievement for everybody."

A few highlights from today’s matches…
Under-17 Girls
Legends Breakaway (CA-S) have already booked their trip to the National Championships via winning the US Youth Soccer National League, but they want to take the Region IV championship with them as they head to the final thanks to a 4-0 victory over TSA 95 Red (AZ). University of San Diego commit Kylie Sincox netted what proved to be the game winner in the 18th minute as the score remained 1-0 coming out of the break. In the second half, Breakaway pulled away with goals from Jordan Jesolva, Nicolette Martino (Loyola Marymount) and Taylor Vargo (Pepperdine).
Central Valley Chilipeppers (CA-N) not only earned a spot in the regional final with a 3-1 victory over Arsenal Colorado, they also get to start making plans for the National Championships as they will represent Region IV thanks to Legends Breakaway already going as the National League representative. Colby Carson grabbed the early lead for Central Valley in the 2nd minute to get things started and Jacqueline Locke doubled the lead in the 30th. Katy Couperus pulled Arsenal back within a goal just before halftime, but Central Valley put the game away for good with Brianna Visalli’s strike in stoppage time.
Under-13 Boys
Banat 99 Gold (AZ) were eliminated in the 2011 semifinals by the eventual champion, but they took care of business this year to advance to the final with a 4-0 win versus Hawaii Rush 99 Nike. Adrian Argueta put Banat ahead in the 7th minute and teammates Dantedario Reyes and Carlos Franco extended the lead to three before halftime. With solid defense protecting a three goal lead, Reyes completed his brace in the 70th as Banat will play for the championship in 2012.
United FC Gold 98 (CA-S) have claimed the 2012 Cal-South state championship and the Dallas Cup trophy, and now will play for top spot in Region IV as they held on to a 1-0 lead to beat Washington Premier FC 98 Black. Kevin Diaz lifted United to victory with the game winning strike in the 28th minute as the defense proved their worth in the shutout. The final will be a rematch from Pool B when United and Banat played to a 1-1 draw after both teams had already qualified for the elimination rounds.
Under-12 Girls
Despite dropping a 1-0 decision to La Roca in the Utah State Championship, Sparta United 99 Premier will play for the Region IV title after holding off Legends FC 99 (CA-S) by a 1-0 score. Bryanna Miller netted the winning goal early in the 13th minute and the Sparta defense took care of the rest as they look to avenge their loss from the state final.
It will be Utah state final rematch in the U-12 Girls regional championship game as La Roca Premier PO (UT) prevailed in a penalty shootout after enduring a scoreless regulation and two overtime periods versus Northwest Nationals (WA). La Roca were perfect from the spot to take a 5-3 advantage in the shootout to advance to the Region IV championship.
Under-16 Boys
West Coast FC is headed to the regional final after dispatching 2011 finalist Heat FC 96 SH (NV), formerly Neusport FC, 3-1. West Coast wasted no time enforcing their will as they reeled off three goals before the game was 20 minutes old. Ether Bustos put West Coast ahead just two minutes after the opening whistle and Ivan Canales doubled the lead 10 minutes later. Taylor Davidson made it 3-0 with a goal in the 19th minute before Blake Damato pulled one back for Heat in the 42nd. That was all the scoring as neither team could find the net in the second half and West Coast moves on to play for a trip to South Carolina.
Arsenal FC Lucey (CA-S) have won all five games of the tournament by one goal and will face West Coast FC in an all Cal-South final after beating Westside Metros Galacticos (OR) 1-0 in the semifinals. Carlos Chagolla scored the game winner in the 43rd minute to send Arsenal into Sunday’s championship game, which will be a rematch of the Cal-South state final which West Coast won 1-0.
News on Semifinal schedule set at 2012 US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships
Of the 246 teams that began the tournament, the dreams of 64 remain alive in the 2012 US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships, presented by the National Guard, as the quarterfinal round was completed today. There was a heightened sense of intensity as games kicked off at the Reach 11 Sports Complex in Phoenix, Ariz., as teams were competing for one of four spots in the semifinals.
The National Guard's partnership with US Youth Soccer is focused on enriching the soccer experience by positively influencing players and coaches in areas of leadership and character development while adding a strong presence of American pride.
Noah Gins' Under-17 Boys Albion White won their second consecutive Cal-South state title and are looking to return to the National Championships for the third straight season after falling in the final game in heartbreaking fashion the last two years. Qualifying as National League champs in 2010 and 2011, Albion will have to claim the regional title to make the trip to South Carolina this year as they finished in a first place tie in National League play, losing out on the automatic spot via tiebreakers. Albion is back in the semifinals for the first time since 2009, where there were defeated by the eventual national champion.
"You’ve got everybody’s state champion or Far West Regional League champion, and that obviously brings a winning mentality here. It brings in teams that have successful formulas," said Albion SC Director of Coaching, Noah Gins. "We’ve played in the National League and been to the national championship twice, and I think that has been the biggest component of preparing us for this level. We’re here to get to the national championship, we’re not here to win a regional title and stand there. We’re playing for a national title and in order to get that we have to win this event. It’s very clear about what we want here."
Eastside FC 95 Red(WA) Under-16 Girls are shooting for a regional championship after finishing third in the National League. The Washington state champs have yet to concede a goal after advancing to the semifinals and are hoping to take advantage after bowing out in the quarterfinals in 2011. The only blemish on Eastside’s record was a 0-0 draw with Cal-South state champs FRAM Premier, who are still alive in the other semifinal.
"We’ve made it to the semifinals and hopefully we’re not done yet," said Eastside FC Head Coach, Tom Bialek. "The competition here is fantastic. Every team that you play is a state champion and you know going in that you’re going to have your hands full. We’ve done National League and Far West Regional League and those kinds of experiences have really helped us because when you get to this level every team is very good, and you know it’s going to be a challenge."
A few highlights from matches...
Under-17 Boys
Knocking off 2011 quarterfinalist New Mexico Rush Nike 95 4-1 today, Albion White (CA-S) advances to the regional semifinals for the first time since 2009, although they've been national finalists each of the past two years. Patrick Barba set the tone with an 8th minute header before Tony Kirouac made it a two goal lead 20 minutes in. Rush pulled back into the game in the second half with a Luke Lawrence goal in the 49th, but Matias Rodriguez grabbed the goal back for Albion in the 73rd and Kirouac sealed the game with his second goal in the 83rd.
Mt. Hamilton PAC Tigres (CA-N) have advanced to the Region IV final the past two years, winning the title in 2010, and are in the semifinals this season after a 2-0 victory over rival Santa Clara Sporting 94 (CA-N). The game was scoreless until the 70th minute when Lorenzo Vazquez put Tigres in the lead. With time running down, Salem Lee grabbed a second to send Tigres onto the next round with a two goal victory.
After failing to advance from their group in 2011, Sereno 95 White (AZ) knocked off the defending champion, Eastside FC 94 Red (WA), 1-0 to move onto the semifinals. Neither team could break through until the 73rd minute when Luis Manta scored the game winner. Although Eastside was eliminated, they have already booked a trip to South Carolina as National League champs.
Another familiar face in the U-17 Boys semis is Boise Nationals Premier (ID), who lost in the 2010 final to PAC Tigres before a disappointing campaign last year. Nationals fought off Las Vegas Sports Academy 95 Red (NV) 2-1 to return to the final four. Jacob Szuch scored both goals for Nationals, taking the lead in the 21st and then scoring the game winner in the 84th after Blake Frischknecht leveled for LVSA in the 71st.
Under-16 Girls
2010 national champion MVLA Lightning (CA-N) defeated SC del Sol 96 ECNL (AZ) 2-0 in the Under-16 Girls to advance in their quest to return to the national stage. Youth National Team member Sarah Robinson notched both goals in the second half, the first in the 45th and the second in the 75th, to lead MVLA.
After being knocked out of the quarterfinals last year, Eastside FC 95 Red (WA) is heading to the semifinals following a 1-0 victory over Oregon Rush 95. Abigail Morrow scored the lone goal of the game in the 55th minute to send Eastside through and the defense held on for their fourth straight shutout.
A grudge match between FRAM Premier (CA-S) and Pride Predators 96 (CO) looked like it was headed to overtime as neither team could break down the other, but a FRAM goal from Jordyn Alves three minutes before the final whistle gave them the edge and a seat in the semifinals.
Beach FC (CA-S) had thoughts of advancing to avenge their 2011 semifinal loss, but Sereno 96 White North (AZ) had other ideas as the two clashed in a defensive stalemate. After a scoreless regulation and two scoreless overtime periods, Sereno got the edge from the spot as they defeated Beach 5-3 in penalty kicks.
