Orange Country College Soccer Spotlight: UC IRVINE MEN’S SOCCER Anteaters Shut Out UC Riverside; Final 3-0
The No. 9 UC Irvine men's soccer team (8-1) defeated UC Riverside 3-0 Wednesday night in Big West Conference action at Anteater Stadium.
Once again, Senior Amani Walker makes a strong impact in the soccer match. Walker (San Diego/Francis Parker HS) took a through ball from junior Miguel Ibarra (Lancaster/Taft College) and knocked it inside the left post to put UCI up 1-0 in the 47th minute. Ibarra hit another through ball in the 63rd minute, this time to senior Gray Bailey (Huntington Beach HS) as Bailey found the back of the net for a 2-0 UCI lead. Just over a minute later, senior Spencer Thompson (Ahwatukee, Ariz./Mountain Pointe HS) sent the ball to junior Christian Hernandez (Palmdale/Taft College) with Hernandez then beating the keeper one-on-one putting the ball into the empty net for a 3-0 ‘Eater lead.
Junior goalkeeper Andrew Fontein (Las Vegas, Nev./Sierra Vista HS) had two saves as he picked up his eighth shutout of the season. Keeper Nick Goldreich had six saves for the Highlanders.
UC Irvine has now outscored opponents 24-2 this season and have had shutouts in each of their eight victories.
The ‘Eaters head to Des Moines, Iowa Saturday to face Drake in non-conference play at 5:00 p.m. PT at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
