Youth Soccer News: SD Surf Girls White Win GU10 Surf Cup
The San Diego Surf Girls’ 02/03 White team led by Coach Gabe Arredondo won first place at the prestigious Surf Cup Tournament the weekend of Aug 4-6. The Surf team dominated opening round play outscoring their opponents 14-1 and earning 29 points as they won Bracket A.
Surf opened the weekend with a 4-0 over Mustang SC Fusion early Saturday morning. They then defeated Colorado United Dynamo 3-0 in the afternoon to take a solid lead in the bracket. On Sunday morning Surf gave up their lone goal of pool play as they defeated CZ Elite 7-1, advancing to meet the very tough Legends 02 Lawlor in the semifinals.
In the semifinal game Surf managed to take control of the game early and took a 2-0 lead ten minutes into the game with goals from Dorrian Savage and Daniela Chavira. In the second half it was Surf’s constant pressure that set the tone, keeping ball possession and establishing great rhythm. The aggressiveness of their opponent did not slow down the Surf team, who managed to put a third goal in the net sealing the victory and sending them to the finals to face a great Eagles team.
Eagles had earned their way to the championship match by winning Bracket B with an 8-2 goal differential and 22 points. After defeating So Cal Infinity 3-0 in their only Saturday match, the Eagles came out on Sunday to take a 4-1 win over West Valley Youth Soccer Magic before playing Arsenal FC-Brown to a 1-1 draw. In their semifinal match on Monday, the managed a 2-1 win over a tough Chelsea SC G02 Blue team that had won Bracket C.
In the championship match, Surf struck first at the three-minute mark with a goal from Alyza Eckhardt. Eagles then equalized the score at 1-1 on a corner kick. In spite of intensity, skill and great decision making by both teams, the first half ended with the score tied at 1.
In the second half, Surf took the initiative once again, showing that this team not only has great footwork and magic but will and drive. Lexi Wright took the keeper’s deflection off a shot and put the ball in the back of the net for a 2-1 Surf lead. Eagles did not give up and looked for, and found, another set piece off a corner kick to even out the score. The game ended with several opportunities for Surf, but none went in.
In overtime, Surf came out strong, establishing a constant barrage of pressure on the Eagles defense. The team’s tenacity and heart showed in overtime, as Surf outshot their opponents 10-0. Fortunately for the Eagles team, none of those shots went in. The crossbar the posts and goalkeeper were likely heroes here. Both teams headed to penalty kicks, where Surf goalkeeper Isabella Grust came up huge, stopping 2 of the 4 Eagles shots and proclaiming Surf as the 2012 Surf Cup Girls’ U10 Champions.
Congratulations the San Diego Surf Girls’ 02/03 White.
