The Surf Cup in Del Mar, California was one of the best soccer tournaments for college coaches. Mike Connerley, Tournament Director of the San Diego Surf Cup says, "We have had more than 400 college coaches attend. The tournament was a success." SoccerNation interviewed several coaches from Harvard, Yale, Standford, Westpoint, Dartmouth, UC Irvine and Auburn among others at Surf Cup. Watch for our upcoming Spotlight on College Coaches and What They Want soon on SoccerNation.
Here is what soccer coaches on the pitch told SN:
Hector Diaz Head Coach San Diego Aztecs FC BU18 Super Defeated Eastside FC 93 Red said, “I thought we played very well the first half. We dominated, but just missed a lot of opportunities. The second half we didn’t play as well as the first half, but we scored.”
Mike Lanos Club Head Coach Gloucester Hornets OYSL GU17 Gloucester, Ontario, Canada Team tied CZ Elite 2-2 in the last game of pool play, which eliminated both teams in the tournament – one needed to win by at least 1 to be in the running for moving up. “This is our second year at Surf Cup. Last year we sent the same team with a little different composition, and they did well: 1-1-1.”
“It’s quite a venue, and it’s easy selling 17 year old girls on coming to the beach, so they were quite keen on coming again. We’re very happy to be here.”
“CZ Elite is a quality team and they put us under a lot of pressure. We were down 0-2, so we made a bit of a tactical adjustment at the beginning of the second half and were able to tie it. We had a few good quality chances to win it, but didn’t put it away. Unfortunately the final 2-2 tie eliminated two very good teams from the tournament.”
“Surf Cup is a quality tournament. This year I’ve been to the Dallas Cup, another good quality tournament, with a different team. We were at the Disney Cup in Florida, but there is just something about California. We are going to be sending more teams here in the future. We had a boys’ team here this year, and although they didn’t do as well in terms of results, they certainly enjoyed their experience. I think they realized that California soccer is very good.”
Alexandra King Keeper and Captain of the Gloucester Hornets OSYL GU17 said, “The Surf Cup is amazing. It’s one of the biggest tournaments I’ve ever been to. I was here last year, too, and it’s always well organized and a lot of fun.” “We did our best. We come out hard every game. We could have made it all the way, but not this time. Maybe we’ll come back and win it all next time.”
“It’s awesome being in California for the tournament. We had some guest players this time and they were two of the best players I’ve seen. They were fast, with very good ball control, and created a lot of goals for us.”
“I want to thank the organizers of the Surf Cup. It was awesome having us out here and getting us involved in this tournament. It was a great experience.”
Ted Colburn Top Hat Gold GU16, Atlanta, GA told SN, “We’ve been coming to Surf Cup every year for the past 16 years. You can’t beat the competition or the weather, and it’s also a great time for us to come out because it’s summer and there is no conflict with school.”
“The one thing that’s tough for us is that it’s the start of our season, so we haven’t had a lot of time to prepare. But I’m pleased with how we’re playing for the first time this year, against such good competition. We’re a little bit rusty, but overall we did well. We use this tournament as a way to prepare ourselves for our regular season, and I couldn’t be more pleased with our progress over the last three games.”
“We’re in the Southeast Region, which includes some of the top teams from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, and that starts up at the end of August. From this tournament we’ll go home, take a week off, and then train two weeks and be right into our Region 3 premiere league season.”
“I’ve been coaching for 20 years, and this is by far the most well run, well organized tournament I’ve been to. That’s why we keep coming back every year.”
Billy Wiskel Director of Coaching San Juan SC in Sacramento San Juan GU16 ECNL 96 defeated Mustangs in PK to reach quarter finals and said, “The Surf Cup is always the best tournament. It brings out the best teams, as you can see here with the tie-breakers. We played three games, all three within a goal. The reason we bring our San Juan teams is to play the best of the best. It really shows the level your players are able to compete at. Sometimes in some of the games maybe the better team doesn’t win, but I think it’s a great test of character to see how your players do, especially in a PK format.”

“We’ve been coming to Surf Cup for ten to twelve years. It’s a quality environment to play in, phenomenal facilities, and of course the competition is second to none.”
Taylor Haynes Assistant Coach Toro SC GU17 – Booyah told SN, “The name ‘Booyah’ comes from the team’s youth days when they were the best team in the Midwest Region. If you look at the Toro teams, they all have fun, exciting names. We decided to keep that part of the game intact, whereas most clubs go with more professional names such as ‘U19 Elite Red.’ We decided to let our kids have some fun with the names, so we have teams named ‘Booyah,’ ‘Hoorah,’ ‘Courage,’ and ‘Bravo.’ What’s funny is they play like their name. They’re the most exciting team in their age group, I believe.”
“The Surf Cup tournament has been excellent and the competition has been fantastic. We came out against Legends FC, another excellent squad, in our first round game, and we proved our pedigree. The facilities are excellent, so it has been easy to move the ball around, which is the brand of soccer we play.”
“The competition has been very tight. We tied our first game against Legends and lost our second game against San Juan Spirit. We didn’t play our best in that second game, so we had to have a response and win this morning to get into the quarter finals, and we’re very happy about that. We believe we can play with anyone.”
“This is my first trip to Surf Cup, and it’s been everything people have told me about. It’s a great facility and San Diego is a beautiful city. There has been a good level of play all around, and it’s been good to interact not only with our team but with other teams, coaches, and college coaches.”
“This is the best women’s soccer event in the country and San Diego is a tremendous venue. I want to thank the people who put Surf Cup on and encourage them not to get complacent and to take it to the next level.”
Javier McDonald Head Coach Mexicas FC 95 from El Paso, TX defeated AC Bethesda 2-1 in BU17 Super quarter finals “We played AC Bethesda U17, a very strong team from Maryland. It’s the first time we had ever played a team from the East Coast. They were very physical and very fast, and we’re not used to that style of game. In South Texas and New Mexico we don’t have that kind of speed. We play physical but with a lot of long balls to the wings. But we planned the game well. I told my boys they needed to have possession of the ball, and to take the ball away from them. I think that’s why we had success.”
“We always come to Surf Cup because it’s the best tournament. You play teams from all over the country, and they are very careful to pick out the best teams in the nation. Every time it’s harder. Last year we lost in the semi-finals, and we’re in the semi-finals again this year. We hope to make the step up this year to the finals.”
“This is a Cinderella team. We’re from El Paso, and in El Paso there’s no soccer culture. Mexicas is a one-in-a-million team. They are back-to-back state champions, winning the South Texas championships in 2009 and 2010. We lost in the Regional Finals, but it was the first time a team from El Paso had gone that far.
