Youth Soccer News: Surf Cup Final Update Champions and Finalists
Surf Cup is a professional-quality soccer event.
Read Youth Soccer News: Surf Cup Director Mike Connerley on Tournaments, Teams and His Commitment to Youth Soccer.
Surf Cup is known as the Best of the Best and this year's competition was as high as ever, especially in the younger ages groups. According to Mike Connerley, "Surf Cup XXXII has been great. Both the Olders and the Youngers weekends were terrific, and the attendance for the younger teams is back to the 2007 pre-recession years. The competition has been tough with teams traveling from all over the country to attend the tournament in San Diego."
The word competition implies a contest and at the 32nd Surf Cup, the contest for the best of the best was demanding, requiring tactical, technical and mental as well as physical endurance and strength.
More than 670 teams applied to compete in Surf Cup XXIII and only 376 were accepted. Five State Championship teams did not make the cut to even compete in this prestigious youth soccer tournament. The best college and university coaches traveled far and wide to watch players and identify their freshman rosters.
Winning isn’t everything and youth soccer is a journey of player development and not short spurts to various finish lines. All the teams that participated in this youth soccer tournament should be proud they were accepted to play and rejoice in their experience of great soccer on the beautiful fields at the San Diego Polo Club in Del Mar, California. But in the words of a player whose team finished as a Finalist, “I don’t want to be second, I wanted us to win.” Remembering to place everything in context, congratulations should go to all those on this list!

The Surf Cup Tournaments are premier tournaments, nationally and internationally recognized, and designed to promote the highest level of competition available in youth soccer. Exposure to college coaches is a major goal of Surf Cup, and our tournaments draw a lot of attention from all the major college programs. Our tournaments also attract large crowds, with attendance in the 25,000 – 28,000 range for each weekend.
All games at Surf Cup tournaments are played at a single site, the San Diego Polo Club, located in Del Mar, California. Eighteen full-sized (75×110), immaculately maintained fields provide the best playing surface in the country, if not the world. San Diego is a great vacation destination! Many teams who participate in our tournaments stay to enjoy the beaches, weather and other attractions.
Congratulations to all youth soccer players who competed in this year's San Diego Surf Cup.
