Todd Roby, Director of Communications for US Youth Soccer says, "California is one of the most competitive states for youth soccer. Players on the U.S. National team most often come from California, Texas, Florida and New Jersey." For a player to win the State Championship or to be a Finalists is a huge honor.
Being a Champion or a Finalist in Cal South's State Cup is something a player can always be proud of. Southern California is one of the most competitive areas for youth soccer in America. One coach in Southern California told his players to go home and ask their parents if any of them had ever won a State Championship ... in any state!
Roby from US Youth Soccer also acknowledges that youth soccer has grown significantly in recent years. "When people talk about the growth of soccer, they talk about the numbers of players increasing, but they should really talk about the understanding of the game and how our players knowledge and passion for soccer has grown exponentially," says Roby. Today's youth soccer players at Cal South State Cup certainly demonstrated their skills and passion as well as their determination to win.
This was a special State Cup for San Diego Surf Soccer Club as both their GU9 White team and BU9 White team won Cal South's State Cup Tournament simultaneously. The two Surf soccer teams were playing at the same time on fields next to each other at the Lancaster's Soccer Complex. The GU9's team, coached by Chris Lemay, earned the honor of Champions moments before the BU9 team's game against Cosmos Academy West finished. As soon as the girls game ended, all their Surf players, coaches and parents came over to watch the last few moments of the boys' match. The moment the referee blew his whistle ending the game and Coach Danny Salas' BU9 team won State Cup, the soccer field was flooded with Surf players all congratulating each other.
Colin Chesters, Director of Coaching for San Diego Surf Soccer Club says, "This is the first time in years our younger boys are state cup champions. I believe the last time Surf has a U9 or U10 boys team win State Cup was when AJ Soares' team won. (Soares is now with the MLS team New England Revolution.) We do not usually dominate at the BU9 bracket against superior hispanic teams. Our Surf girls teams win often, which is really wonderful, but to have that special moment when both U9 teams won within minutes of each other...it was so gratifying to see the girls coming over to congratulate the boys and for there to be so many Surf coaches around when all this was happening."
Teddy Chronopolous, Director of Coaching for Cosmos Academy West says "Congratulations to all the Champions and Finalists in Cal South's State Cup."
