Southern California Developmental Soccer League (SCDSL) Launches

Youth Soccer News: Southern California Developmental Soccer League (SCDSL)

UPDATED: 3.2. 2011 at 4:30

The following clubs are pleased to announce their participation as founding members in the new Southern California Developmental Soccer League (SCDSL) beginning in September of 2011. The goal of the SCDSL is very simple; to allow all participating clubs to have the freedom to make decisions that are in the best interest of all their players and to place the League’s priority first and foremost on true player development.

All the founding clubs understand that the landscape of youth soccer is dramatically changing across the country and the philosophy of the SCDSL ensures that players of all abilities will be training and competing in an environment that allows them to reach their full potential. Southern California has always been a national leader in player development and the creation of the SCDSL is a major step in ensuring that trend continues for many years to come. In the new league all players will have the necessary tools to make their goals and dreams become a reality.

The SCDSL will be announcing specific details in the very near future. For any clubs that would like to find out more information about the SCDSL, please feel free to contact any of the following points of contact from the founding clubs and they will be happy to answer your questions:

Scott Murray: Scscmurr@aol.com
Teddy Chronopoulos: tchrono1972@gmail.com
Don Ebert: don.ebert9@gmail.com

The SCDSL Founding Clubs are (in alphabetical order):

Arsenal FC, Chivas USA, Cosmos Academy, Irvine Strikers, L.A. Galaxy, Laguna Hills Eclipse, Legends FC, Nomads, OC Revolution, Pateadores, PVSC Exiles, Real So Cal, Slammers FC, So Cal Blues, So Cal Infinity, South Bay Force, South Coast Bayern San Diego Surf Soccer Club, United FC, and West Coast FC.

SN Interviewed Scott Murray earlier today who confirmed the new league will be launching this fall for ages U9 through U19 and said "While our new league will be competitive, players do not have to be of the highest level to participate. This league is for greater and accelerated player development.   Our focus is on the development of the youth soccer player and not the 'Win at All Cost' mentality."  Murray stated that this new league is not "elitist and are looking for controlled growth."

For more information on the ideas behind this new league, please read SN's interview with four of the several founding Directors of Coaching: Scott Murray, Sasha van der Most, Teddy Chronopolous and Derek Armstrong on the New League.

Very interesting indeed! I'd like to know what the league founder plan (and the soccer uppidyups in general) to do in REAL terms to foster "individual player development." It's become THE buzz word lately, but all I hear is BUZZ, no real concrete day-to-day solutions about how it actually happens on the field at training or at practice. Since they're so concerned about "individual development," is this new league going to have individual skills games (1v1s? 2v2s? juggling competitions?) instead of real 11v11 games? Are they not going to keep score or rankings (are we back to 4yr old YMCA soccer??)?
