Youth Soccer News: Rebels Soccer Club Go Pink to Take on Breast Cancer Challenge
After a successful summer that saw teams reach the finals in several tournaments, the Rebels Soccer Club will take on an even bigger challenge this month – breast cancer. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, nearly two dozen teams will “go pink” for their games during October. In addition, many will be working to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure of San Diego.

The idea originally came to the board from Coach Roy Lopez, who leads the club’s GU10 and GU11 teams, but it was conceived by GU11 manager Christy Popp. It was Popp who suggested that teams be allowed to wear pink socks to honor those who have fought the battle against breast cancer. Having known people who had both won and lost the battle against breast cancer, Popp wanted to do something to support those currently facing the fight. The Rebels SC Board agreed with the idea and voted to allow any team to wear club-approved pink socks at their October matches. Teams that do not wish to wear pink socks can choose instead to wear pink laces, pink ribbons or other similar items, as long as the entire team participates.
As of the end of the first week of the month, nineteen teams had chosen to sport the pink socks, and one was using pink laces. Other teams have decided to have players paint pink breast cancer ribbons on their cheeks for games. Several teams are also participating in a “dollar per goal” challenge for every goal scored during their October Presidio Soccer League matches.
Rebels SC, based in Chula Vista, are premier soccer club in San Diego County. The Rebels are dedicated to developing all players to the highest physical, emotional and athletic potential. The club also stresses sportsmanship, character and discipline through the Rebels Philosophy. By showing this club-wide support for such an important cause as the fight against breast cancer, the club demonstrates to players and parents that these traits grow in ways that go far beyond the pitch.
