NSCAA's new book this year is The Best of Soccer Journal: An NSCAA Guide to Soccer Coaching Excellence. The best and most interesting articles from 20 years of the NSCAA’s The Soccer Journal are in this book.  All aspects of soccer training are covered beginning with the mental side and including highlights on tactics and technique, coaching and team management, as well as fitness and nutrition. Editorial Note:  If you only want to buy one book on coaching youth soccer and player development - this should be it!

The NSCAA Guide to Soccer Coaching Excellence

FIVE STAR RATING

Jay Martin edited The Best of Soccer Journal: An NSCAA Guide to Soccer Coaching Excellence.

Jay Martin is an exceptional college coach with the highest win ratio ever.

To discover more on Martin, please read: Ohio Wesleyan University Men’s Soccer Coach Posts Record-Setting 608th Career Victory. This article explores Jay Martin's coaching philosophy and his NCAA D-III National Championship Game Win.

In this book, the top articles from 20 years of the NSCAA's Soccer Journal are collected to form a guidebook which covers the fundamental aspects of all aspects of soccer training and coaching.  Beginning with the mental side and including highlights on tactics and technique, coaching and team management, the NSCAA guide even covers fitness and nutrition.

The book covers an extensive array of crucial topics including the Principles of Teaching Techniques, Dribbling: A Crucial Component, Fast Footwork, First Touch - Fine Tuning Technique, Finishing: Technique and Repetition, Goalkeeper Training, Training to Save the Breakaway, The Four Main Moments of Soccer, Possession and Penetration, Defending Not Hard but Smart, The Perils of Criticism and many more.  Even tough controversial subjects are covered such as Winners are Different and Women: It's OK to Compete.

My favorite section is on Nutrition, which provides guidance on the proper feeding of soccer players and game day nutritional advice.

Players, parents and coaches are always looking for specifics (as if the holy grail does exist), the guide offers clear recommendations on what to eat and drink 2-4 hours before a game, 1-2 hours before whistle blows and even minutes before.

One of my favorites is Here's Proof Sports Drinks Work written by Don Kirkendall. Just like all the other sections in the book, Kirkendall demystifies the topic with clear, easy to understand writing and fun references that make readers smile.

Empowering knowledge through the printed word is never easy and the NSCAA Guide to Soccer Coaching Excellence does more than provide a reference for coaches, it makes a difference in the world of soccer by making complex and crucial information easy to access and understand. Definitely a must buy book.
