Women's Soccer News: San Diego SeaLions Performed Perfectly On The Road
WPSL Soccer News: San Diego SeaLions earned back-to-back shutouts Saturday and Sunday
The San Diego SeaLions earned another 6 points this weekend after earning back-to-back shutouts on the road. San Diego blanked the professional OC Waves 1-0 Saturday night at Orange Coast College, and then traveled to La Canada, CA for a 3-0 result against LA Premier.
“It was an exciting weekend for us,” said Head Coach Jen Lalor-Nielsen. “Going on the road and getting two wins—one of them against the new professional team, was a huge confidence booster for us.”
On Saturday, the San Diego women's soccer team, the SeaLions, headed to Orange Coast College for the highly anticipated rematch against the OC Waves. The two teams met last Sunday at Cathedral Catholic, with the SeaLions netting two goals in the first half for a comfortable 2-0 lead. OC Waves fought back hard in the second half to tie the game, and then drew a penalty kick in stoppage time to finish for a 3-2 win.
Saturday’s game went scoreless in the first half. San Diego came out with intensity, dominating the play and denying any chances for the Waves. In the 53rd minute, SeaLion outside left midfielder Sarah McTigue chipped a ball over Waves goalkeeper Sophia Perez into the upper right-hand corner of the net, giving San Diego a 1-0 lead.
The SeaLions' defensive “Twin Towers” Sarah Devine and CoCo Goodson were impenetrable in the back, helping to keep OC off the scoreboard for the first time all season, and securing the 1-0 win for San Diego.
The SeaLions are the only team to date to beat the OC Waves, and the only team to deny them of a goal. The SeaLions and the Waves are currently tied for first place at the top of the WPSL Pac-South division standings.
The San Diego SeaLions hit the road again on Sunday for La Canada, CA where they took on LA Premier FC. At their last meeting, the SeaLions were victorious sent LA home with a 0-3 loss. This Sunday was no different. Shay Omahen crossed a ball in from the right that was collected by Z Wyne who turned, fired and buried it in the back of LA’s net in the 27th minute. In the 63rd minute, two center midfielders, Alana Wohlers and Rosie Tantillo connected and Tantillo was able to get San Diego goal number two. Less than ten minutes later, Wohlers earned her second assist of the night on a ball to Britney Bennett who finished it, getting the 3-0 win for the SeaLions.
Coach Lalor-Nielsen said, “This team is playing so well together right now. We are creating a lot of scoring opportunities every game. Our defensive line has been rock solid all season, and this weekend showed again our domination with the two shutouts.”
The SeaLions are back at Cathedral this weekend for two, back-to-back games. On Saturday, July 2, they take on the San Francisco Nighthawks at 7:30 p.m.
Prior to game, the SeaLions will be hosting a viewing party for the U.S. Women's National Team’s match against Columbia in the Women’s World Cup at O'Brien's Pub. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m.
On Sunday, July 3, the SeaLions will battle Brandi Chastain’s team, the Sacramento Storm. Kick off is set for 2:00 p.m. Prior to the game, the SeaLions will be collecting equipment, uniform and monetary donations for the Chisomo Idea, an African-born global grassroots movement connecting the privileged young to issues of poverty in Africa. Please bring whatever you can!
