College Soccer News: SDSU Women Rank in Top 25 in NCAA Division I Poll
The San Diego State University (SDSU) women’s soccer program has made the 2012 NCAA Division I Top 25 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Poll after the second full week of play. The team has gotten off to a 4-0 start, their first in 16 seasons, and are the only team from the Mountain West Conference in the top 25. The Aztecs made the move to No. 25 with 88 points after being unranked in the first week's poll.
The Aztecs opened the season with a 1-0 overtime win against SMU at home on Friday, August 17. SDSU then proceeded to defeat Arizona State University (2-0), Saint Francis (1-0) and Seattle U (2-0). The Aztecs will finish up their five-game season opening home stand on Friday, August 31, when they host No. 5 ranked Pepperdine in a key early-season match. All home games are played at the SDSU Sports Deck.
SDSU also improved to the No. 3 spot in the NSCAA Pacific Region, behind UCLA and Stanford. The Aztecs are also the only Mountain West team ranked in this poll. In addition, several members of the team have received individual recognition for their contributions to the 4-0 record.
Haley Locker, who scored the winning goal against Saint Francis and the second goal against Seattle U, was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week and the CollegeSportsMadness.com Mountain West Player of the Week. Locker leads the team with three goals on only four shots, for a total of six points. Carli Johnson, a junior midfielder, was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts in the Aztecs’ two shutouts. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Boaz, who has recorded four clean sheets and ten saves so far this season, was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week.
"We are honored to be recognized by the other coaches and excited about our start to the season, but we are focused on the end goals we have set for our program," head coach Mike Friesen told GoAztecs.com. "The team has done a fantastic job of remaining focused on our process and we will continue to remind them that our success will come when we focus on that process each day."
The Aztecs are playing their final season in the Mountain West Conference. In 2013 the team, along with most of SDSU’s other athletic programs, will join the Big West Conference.
