Youth Soccer News: San Diego Soccer Club GU10 Win Flight 2 Title at West Coast Futbol Classic
San Diego Soccer Club’s (SDSC) Girls’ U10 team won their sixth summer tournament out of seven attempts as they captured the West Coast Futbol Classic GU10 Flight 2 Championship over the August 18-19 weekend. Head coach Norbert Deyna and his team have worked hard over the summer, winning championships at Super Cup Memorial, Manchester Cup, CSC Cup, Carlsbad Cup and San Diego Premier Cup leading up to West Coast.
SDSC opened the tournament on Saturday morning with a 1-1 draw against top Bracket B competitor Lazers SC 02 Chin. It would be the only spot on their weekend record. The team came back that afternoon to take a 3-0 victory against West Coast United Blue, and followed that up by defeating SC Athletic Holley GU10 on Sunday by a 5-1 score. That put SDSC into the finals against Bracket A winner LV Premier SC ‘03G White from Las Vegas, Nevada.
LV Premier had posted a near-identical record to SDSC, going 2-1-0 with ten goals for and one against in Bracket A. The team opened strong with a 7-0 win over West Coast United Cucuk on Saturday morning and followed that up with a 2-0 victory over FC Blades GU10 Winn in the afternoon. On Sunday the girls from Nevada suffered their only non-win, a 1-1 draw with LA Premier FC, to earn their way into the finals.
On Sunday afternoon SDSC and LV Premier faced off for the championship. The heat had been a factor for many final matches over the weekend, and this was no different. After a closely-battled contest, SDSC came away with a 2-1 win to claim their sixth Champions finish of the summer.
San Diego Soccer Club faced LV Premier in the West Coast Futbol Classic GU10 Championship
The GU10 team has had a very strong summer and are coming together nicely for being a new team. The team has played in seven summer tournaments and has won six. The teams record for the summer is 22 – 3 – 1. This is a pretty good record in my opinion.
“The three losses have come to high quality teams from Carlsbad Lighting, Chelsea, and Hotspurs. The tournaments the girls have won are Memorial Super Cup, Manchester Cup, Crusader Cup, Carlsbad Cup, SD Premier Cup, and West Cost flight 2," says Coach Norbert Deyna.
"The team has bonded well together and continues to grow learning the game and improving their skills on a weekly basis," says Coach Deyna. "I am very proud of the girls on how quickly they have come together as a team. We still have plenty of work ahead of us and a tough league to face. I am confident we will continue to grow and hopefully raise a few more eyebrows during the league. I am blessed to have a team like this to coach."
Norbert Deyna, who has 20 years experience coaching soccer, assembled the new team this season by combining players from both the A and B teams as well as new players to the SDSC club.
A coach of Coast League and Presidio Cup Championship teams, Deyna has coached ODP, College, high school soccer and competitive youth club soccer. Deyna believes in providing an environment that is conducive to every child developing as a soccer player within the team structure while also stressing the importance of improving as an individual by practicing soccer skills outside the team setting.
Congratulations to Coach Deyna and the San Diego Soccer Club Girls U10 team on an outstanding summer tournament season.
