The UCI women defeated UCSB and Cal Poly over the weekend

College Soccer News: Irvine Women Take Two

The UC Irvine women are back on track on the Big West Conference standings, having won both our games this weekend 1-0 against UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly. Those two wins give us a total of 7 points, putting us in 2nd place at the half way point for the season. Only Long Beach State are ahead of us with 9 points and we go head to head with them on Sunday, October 16, at 6:00 p.m. here at Anteater Stadium. We are currently ranked #22 in the country by

We had 971 fans attending the game here on Friday, which meant another “FANtastic” atmosphere and a high energy game. This exciting atmosphere and the sight of so many young players in line after the game to get their team posters signed by the players is a concrete sign that the future of NCAA D-I Women’s Soccer is bright. If you were fortunate enough to make it to the game, thanks again for your support.

We had conceded way too many goals in recent games, and we had worked hard all week to improve in the way we defended, from our forwards right through to our goalkeeper. Early in the week the players showed a lot of maturity by accepting where we had made mistakes, embracing the things we needed to do to change things and worked extremely hard to be ready for the game.

The team did incredibly well, with inspirational performances at defensive central midfield and center back from Judy Christopher, Sarah Devine and Coco Goodson. They were top class and you would do well to find a better three players in those positions anywhere across the country. Our other two starting seniors, Lexi Kopf and Amanda Hardeman, also put in couple of great shifts to lead this team.

In our game against UC Santa Barbara on Friday, Dana Sanderlin smashed home the game winning goal in the middle of the first half. Defensively we limited UCSB to just 2 shots on goal for the entire game. The game was the first ever UCI soccer game to be streamed live on the Internet, and it should be archived and available on Big West TV soon.

On Sunday we stuck to a similar game plan against Cal Poly, but we had to wait until the 71st minute to get the goal. Devon Delarosa crossed a great ball for Zuri Walker to “give it the eyebrows” and help it on and into the path of freshman Cami Privett who crushed it home at the back post. It was a game we controlled from start to finish, giving up only a single shot on goal in the entire 90 minutes. This meant that in 180 minutes of Big West soccer over the weekend we conceded a total of only 3 shots on our goal compared to 19 last weekend! Congratulations to our whole team for this achievement because this took every single player from front to back.

We travel to Cal State Fullerton on Friday night for a 7:00 p.m. kick off. UC Irvine will be “live-blogging” from Fullerton as Game Tracker is not available. Click here to access the blog on Friday.

We return to Anteater Stadium for the game against Long Beach State on Sunday, October 16, which will kick off at 6:00 p.m. These are big games for us and we hope to see another energized crowd at the game on Sunday. We will make sure we have a free team poster for all youth soccer players attending the game, so bring a “Sharpie” and meet the players after the game!

Finally, we would like to congratulate our Men’s Soccer program for the great season they are having and encourage you to support senior goalkeeper Andrew Fontein, who is a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Awards. See you on the field!
