Youth Soccer News: Albion SC White Win United Cup BU11 Superliga

The competiton was tough, the weather hot and the desire to become champions strong.  Albion's BU11 defeated very strong teams including Surf Cup XXXII champions Barcelona to earn the title of United Cup Champions.

It was a great weekend in San Juan Capistrano for the Albion SC White BU11 team under the direction of Coach Roy Lassiter. Facing stiff competition from other top Southern California clubs, the team went undefeated in competition to win the United Cup BU11 Superliga during a hot August weekend.

The fun started early on Saturday morning, August 18, as Albion took a 2-1 victory over Chivas USA Youth Academy. That afternoon Lassiter’s boys put on a scoring clinic, defeating Real So Cal Blue by an 8-0 score and taking the lead in Bracket A on point differential.

Sunday morning Albion played their bracket rival Barcelona USA Academy to a 1-1 draw, giving the two teams identical 2-1-0 records, but Albion retained first seed on the strength of their +9 differential.

In the Sunday afternoon semi-final, Albion met the number two team from Bracket B, FC Barcelona, who had compiled a 2-0-1 record to finish behind United FC B01 Black. The boys from San Diego had little trouble handling this challenge, coming away with a 3-0 win to earn the right to play for the championship against a familiar foe – Barcelona USA Academy, a very strong team that had won Surf Cup XXXII earlier this month.

Barcelona had matched Albion’s record game-for-game over the weekend, although not goal-for-goal. Their biggest win came in their opener against Real So Cal Blue as they put in five goals toward a 5-1 final. Their second match, against Chivas USA, was a much tighter 2-1 victory, which led to their 1-1 draw with Albion to close out bracket play. Barcelona then defeated United FC 3-0 in their semi-final match.

Both Albion and Barcelona had something to prove after their earlier meeting, and neither side was willing to give in. Ultimately, though, it was Albion who netted the game-winning goal to take a 2-1 victory and earn the Champions title.

“I’m very proud of the boys today – of their efforts and how they showed great determination against a tough Barcelona squad,” said Lassiter after the match. “It was a tough game.”
