Soccer News: SD Sockers Forward Kraig Chiles Honored as Star of the Year by San Diego Hall of Champions

Poway High School and SDSU graduate set PASL goals record during perfect 2012

San Diego Sockers forward Kraig Chiles is one of fifteen amateur or professional athletes honored with a 2012 Star of the Year designation by the San Diego Hall of Champions for exemplary athletic performance in the city of San Diego. Chiles will be honored at the Hall’s annual Salute to Champions banquet on February 25 at the Town and Country hotel.

“It’s truly humbling and an honor to be included with the other fourteen pro and college athletes,” said Chiles upon learning of his award, “I could never have imagined receiving an award like this two years ago. It’s something I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

A graduate of Poway High and San Diego State University (SDSU), Chiles has been tearing up the PASL record book since joining the Sockers during their franchise reboot in 2009-10. The back-to-back league MVP set a new single-season record with 46 goals in 15 games last season as the Sockers rolled to a 24-0 record and three trophies. His 66 points were just two shy of the PASL single-season record.

“We are extremely excited as a franchise to have a quality athlete like Kraig on our side,” said Sockers general manager John “Coach” Kentera, “Chiles has worked extremely hard to improve his game each year, and every honor he’s received he’s deserved.”

Chiles has taken his dominance to a new level to open the 2012-13 campaign, with 38 goals and 47 points in nine games. During the Sockers’ current 46-game winning streak, a U.S. professional team sports record, Kraig has played in 42 of the 46 games, scoring a team-leading 124 goals during the streak. Overall, Chiles is the PASL’s all-time leader with 145 goals and 190 points in 54 games.

The 67th annual Salute to the Champions dinner on Monday, February 25th will include the induction of former Sockers great Brian Quinn into the Bob Breitbard Hall of Fame, along with San Diego Padres closer Trevor Hoffman, NFL player Stephen Neal and San Diego Chargers linebacker Junior Seau (posthumously). For tickets to Salute to the Champions, contact Sarah Petitpierre-Branco at the San Diego Hall of Champions at sarahpb@sdhoc.com or 619-699-2338.
