Indoor Soccer News: SD Sockers Update for January 25, 2012

The San Diego Sockers completed another successful weekend, defeating Turlock Express at the Del Mar Arena on Saturday and Arizona Storm in Phoenix on Sunday. The weekend also marked team and individual milestones.

Susi Reaches Milestone in Sockers Win

Sockers captain Aaron Susi put a milestone mark on a magnificent career Saturday, scoring his 500th career point in San Diego’s 10-8 win over the Turlock Express. Susi had a goal and two assists in the game to reach point No. 500, which came on an assist to Eric Wunderle with 1:27 remaining in the third quarter. The two-time All-American at SDSU has been playing professional indoor soccer for 15 seasons and has been a part of each of the three championship teams so far in PASL history.

Sockers Reach Open Cup Finals

Saturday’s win over Turlock advanced San Diego into their third straight U.S. Open Cup Championship, which will be played at an Eastern Division venue on Presidents Day Weekend. The Eastern host will be decided between Detroit (9-1) and Cincinnati (4-8) in a match on Saturday.

Sockers Handle Storm on Sunday

Playing back-to-back games for the third weekend in a row, the Sockers still managed to maintain their perfect record for the season, defeating the Arizona Storm 9-3 on Sunday in Phoenix. Kraig Chiles had two goals and two assists while Diego Rovira and Ze Roberto each contributed two goals and an assist. Chad Hagerty added his first Sockers goal as San Diego won their league record 12th straight road game.

San Diego Streak Updates

The Sockers have now won 25 consecutive matches overall, including U.S. Open Cup and playoff action. They have been victorious in 19 straight PASL regular season contests, own a 12-game winning streak on the road, and have a 30-0 all-time record at the Del Mar Arena.

Next Milestone: Chiles 100

With 35 goals and 51 points, PASL MVP Kraig Chiles is closing in on the league records for goals (40) and points (68) in the regular season. In addition, Chiles has 96 career PASL regular season goals in 2+ seasons, four shy of 100.
