The San Diego SeaLions were established in 1988 to provide an opportunity for soccer playing college graduates to play competitive soccer. The SeaLions were one of the original 6 WPSL teams. The SeaLions have sent at least 7 players to the WUSA.
The San Diego SeaLions' story: Founded in 1988 by several players from UCSD and SDSU, the team called itself the "Has-Beens" and won the Peninsula Championship that year. Two years later, sponsored by San Diego Surf Soccer Club, the team entered several tournaments and begun an impressive history of winning.
Impressed by the team's capabilities, the Auto Trader Publications sponsored the team in 1997. "Auto Trader Women's Select" was invited to tour Europe to face clubs in Germany, Hungary, and Italy. The team won the WPSL Championship in 2000. The team has won the US National Cup, and became the developmental squad for the WUSA's San Diego Spirit.
San Diego SeaLions WFC is one of the oldest female soccer clubs in the United States. The highly accomplished SeaLions' roster consists of former WUSA professionals, veterans of the top college programs in the country, and local high school prospects. Now known as the SeaLions, the team continues to inspire soccer players and fans.
