San Diego Christian College (SDCC) Men's soccer team is known as the HAWKS. Coached by Danny Salas, the team's 2010 season opener was held on August 24 against Indiana Wesleyan University's Wildcats. It was an exciting match, which unfortunately ended in a 3-0 loss for our home team, which now starts the year with 0-1 record.  It is important to note there are several members of the HAWKS waiting to joint the starting line up in a few weeks.  The team has only been practicing for a few weeks and with Salas' expert coaching, should be able to have a winning season.

Before the match started, pre-game festivities included each team being escorted to the center line to start the game by the BU9 and BU10 teams from the San Diego Surf Soccer Club.  Salas is the coach for these younger boys at Surf and offered this special opportunity to his teams.  The Surf boys were proud to be with "real" college soccer players and assisted as ball boys for the first half of the match.

According to the San Diego Christian Collage HAWKS website posted by Janelle Demchak "The game was heavy on possession in the first half for both teams, but IWU had a majority of the shots on goal, with their closest chance coming off a shot by Austin Bock in the 9th minute. SDCC was eager to cash in on their forward momentum, so eager they were haulted by offsides calls on four different occasions."

"Both back lines were defensively strong in the first. George Gallegos consistently won balls on the ground for the Hawks and Mark Demchak took SDCC's over the top chances down in the air, also winning a majority of 50/50 balls. SDC's Cameron Riley had one save on a shot by Mitch Lobdell, with 7 fouls a piece in the first."

During half time, the Surf teams scrimmaged each other with a resulting 0-0 finish as neither team could get through the other's defense and successfully put the ball in the net.  The young boys were dripping with sweat as they ran back and forth across the field.  At the U9 and U10 age bracket, youth soccer is played on a smaller size field and the Surf boys were exhausted from racing back and forth as they tried to score.  The audience cheered for the Surf boys as their scrimmage ended and warmly welcomed back the HAWKS and Wildcats for the second half.

Demchak  post continues "As play went on, the air cooled off, but Indiana Wesleyan heated up, mounting attacks out of the back and picking up pace. Their first goal hit the net in the 53rd minute by IWU's Erik Johnson on an unassisted sidevolley that hooked up and over the reach of SDC's keeper Cameron Riley."

IWU's possession of the ball continued for most of the duration of the game and enabled two additional successful shots for a final score of 3-0.
