Women's Soccer News: Chicago Red Stars Win High Scoring Game 5-3 in the Semi Final of National Cup
Defeat Turbo D’Feeters, Led by Amanda Cinalli & Vanessa Laxgang
It took the Chicago Red Stars until the second half of the match to really heat up, but once they got going they were able to extend the gap against Turbo D’Feeters from North Texas (Region III) and secure a high-scoring 5-3 win. The victory sends them to the National Cups final on Sunday, July 22, at Noon on the main field at Toyota Park.
The Red Stars will take on New York Athletic Club (Region I), who defeated Salt Lake United (Region IV) with a commanding 4-0 scoreline today. Amanda Cinalli and Vanessa Laxgang led the way for the Red Stars, scoring 3 goals and 3 assists between them.
The Turbo D’Feeters came out early and strong in the first half, scoring in the 8th and 32nd minutes, before Cinalli would cut that score down with a stoppage time flick over the ‘keeper, putting the score at 2-1 on the half.
The first 10 minutes of the second half, the Red Stars came out on fire, beginning with a tying Kelsey Hough goal in the 48th minute, off a low cross by Cinalli. In the 56th, Niki Sebo was able to muscle around the goalkeeper to send the Red Stars up 3-2. Laxgang was credited with the assist and 6 minutes later would earn a goal of her own, furthering the lead 4-2.
Shortly after the goal, Red Stars central defender Ali Heller would have to step off the field due to a shoulder injury. D’Feeters were able to capitalize on their 1-man advantage, scoring off a long run and edging closer with a 4-3 scoreline. But it turned out to be their final opportunity of the day. The Red Stars would put the finishing touches on the match in the 75th minute when Laxgang would earn another assist, finding the head of Cinalli and closing out the game 5-3.
With the win, the Red Stars have earned their shot at the National Cup Final to take place on Sunday. They will come up against another formidable foe in NYAC, who are previous winners of the National Cup.
The Red Stars are also on the road this weekend closing out their WPSL Elite regular season schedule. They will meet NY Fury on Long Island Sunday night at 7pm ET, essentially splitting the Red Stars roster in half for this weekend’s matches. Shortly after, the Red Stars will travel to Rochester, the host site of the 2012 WPSL Elite Championships to take part in the semifinals on Wednesday, July 25th, and if victorious, the finals on Saturday, July 28th.
