Rebels SC Win

Youth Soccer News: Chula Vista Rebels at San Diego Summer Challenge

Teams from the Chula Vista Rebels SC took part in Chula Vista Pumas Premier’s San Diego Summer Challenge Tournament over the August 18-19 weekend. After weathering both tough opponents and high temperatures, two teams advanced to championship rounds: Coach Joe Hernandez’s GU11 team and Coach Denis Vargas’ GU8 team.

The Hernandez-led girls faced tough competition in Pool A, including Pumas sides from both Chula Vista and Imperial Valley. The tournament opened with a 0-1 loss on Saturday morning to Pumas Premier FC, but the Rebels would not let that slow them down.  That afternoon the the girls got into the win column with a 2-0 victory over IV Pumas FC. When IV Pumas defeated Pumas Premier later that day, it opened the way for the Rebels to move on to the semi-final round.

In the semi-final match the Rebels faced Pumas Premier FC Blue, who had gone 1-1 in Pool B play. The game ended being no contest, as the Rebels handily dispatched this Pumas side 4-1 to move on to the championship match against visiting Colorado Edge SC Select from Denver.

Edge had opened pool play with a commanding 7-0 win over Pumas Premier FC Blue on Saturday, followed by a close 1-0 win against Riptide. Their semi-final match was another nail-biter as they defeated IV Pumas FC 1-0 to earn their ticket to the finals.

In the championship round, Rebels and Edge played a closely-matched game that went scoreless until the final 10 minutes. Eventually, Colorado managed to get past the Rebels’ defense for a goal. Hernandez’s team tried valiantly to net the equalizer, but Edge held strong until the final whistle for the 1-0 win.

In the small GU8 bracket, Vargas’ girls took on two local sides for the GU8 Powercat championship. The Rebels opened with a solid 3-1 win over San Diego Football Academy (SDFA) at noon on Saturday, followed by a 5-0 drubbing of CV Pumas Premier FC just hours later. Those two wins, along with SDFA’s 3-0 victory over Pumas in the morning, sent the Rebels and SDFA into the finals on Sunday. Unfortunately, SDFA was unable to compete in the championship and the Rebels were awarded a 3-0 forfeit victory.
