Youth Soccer News: Poway Vaqueros BU9 Green are San Diego Charity Cup Champions

Poway Vaqueros soccer team, BU9 are coached by Jerry Velazquez.  The team competed in the recent youth soccer tournament in San Diego and became tournament champions.

Father’s Day weekend proved to be one that our Poway Vaqueros BU9 Green Father’s won’t soon forget.  The weather was classic San Diego perfect, the occasion was a tournament with a cause, the “San Diego Charity Cup,” and the Excitement building by the minute as we returned to the field Sunday to play in the final against OVC, was as intense as it gets. 

The first half….It was a long 25 minutes.  

There were several shots taken by multiple Vaquero Players that were so close from the sideline it was in the bag. Unfortunately, they were not in the bag. Though we did make some pretty close plays, the game remained 0-0 well into the second half.  Coach Jerry Velazquez, for the first time ever, as he had said after the game, was unsure where to put players, they were all playing extremely well, but he knew he had to be strategic. His strategy paid off and at about 10-15 minutes into the second half of the game, Oliver Baecker received a pass from Robbie Scott and taking the shot with his left foot, scored the first goal of the game.  

The anticipation and excitement grew even stronger.  With about 5 minutes left in the game, Jacob Pearl scored the second and final Goal.  

Vaqueros had a 2-0 Victory.  

This was our second tournament of the 2011 season and was played with more skill, practice, hard work and effort than our first which was played just a few weeks back on Memorial Weekend.

The added training, handwork and commitment by the players and coaching paid off.  It was not an easy win against OVC,  and players were putting in 110%.  This tournament was a real team effort victory.  Each player contributing equally.

Coach Jerry Velazquez said it best while addressing OVC at the award ceremony, “You gave us a great challenge and didn’t make it an easy win for us.”  ‘Congratulations OVC and Congratulations Vaquero Charity Cup Champions!”
