College Soccer News: Two New Jersey Natives named Disney Soccer/NSCAA Players of the Week
Notre Dame and West Virginia forwards lead their teams to 2-0 marks over the week.
Offense was the name of the game for the most recent recipients of the Disney Soccer/NSCAA Player of the Week awards. Notre Dame’s Ryan Finley and West Virginia’s Kate Schwindel have each been named for their on-field accomplishments for the week of October 1-7 after leading their teams to 2-0 records on the week.
This is Finley’s second time being honored with this award, while WVU gets it second such award following Frances Silva’s nod earlier in the season.
Finley notched a pair of multi-goal performances in the No. 7 Fighting Irish’s 2-0 week. The senior forward from Lumberton, N.J., scored twice as Notre Dame (10-3-0) took a 7-1 win versus Pittsburgh. He then followed up three days later with two goals in a shutout against nationally-ranked Georgetown.
Finley leads the team and the BIG EAST in points (21) and goals (10).
Schwindel’s five-point weekend helped the No. 25 Mountaineers (9-3-3) stay in first place in the Big 12; West Virginia was the only Big 12 team with a 2-0 record last week. The sophomore forward tallied her eighth game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over Kansas. Schwindel followed up with three assists in a 3-2 road win at Iowa State, which was the second time this season she has posted a three-assist performance.
The Livingston, N.J., native leads the team and the conference with 23 points and seven assists.
The Disney Soccer/NSCAA National Player of the Week is announced every Wednesday. Two players, one male and one female, are selected by a committee from nominations submitted primarily by NCAA Division I conferences.
Winners will also be recognized each week during NSCAA College Game of the Week broadcasts on FOX Soccer.
