Player Profile: Jonathan Bornstein - Defender, Chivas USA

Jonathan Bornstein, a native of Los Alamitos, Calif., joined Chivas USA as a fourth-round pick in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft out of UCLA. His first season for the Red-and-White was impressive, as he started every match for the team, scored six goals and added four assists, and was named MLS Rookie of the Year.

An attacking player in college at UCLA (2005) and Cal Poly Pomona (2002-2004), Bornstein made the transition to defense in his first season with Chivas USA. He made his debut with the U.S. National Team on January 20, 2007, scoring a goal in the match against Denmark, and has made 25 international appearances as of Jan. 12, 2010. Bornstein played in all five matches that the U.S. played at the Confederations Cup in South Africa in 2009, where the team earned second place, and has been a part of the squad for many recent FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Bornstein scored the game tying goal in a 2-2 draw against Costa Rica on Oct. 14, 2009, securing the top spot in CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying for the United States Men’s National Team.

MLS Experience

2009: Bornstein spent time at both center and left back while starting all 26 matches he played for Chivas USA, earning one assist. He was named to the MLS All-Star team for the third straight season and was named Chivas USA’s Defender of the Year.

2008: Splitting time between defense and midfield, Bornstein scored two goals and added two assists in 21 games (19 as a starter), missing some time due to injuries. Was named to the MLS All-Star Team for the second straight season and played 88 minutes in a 3-2 win over West Ham United, and was also named Chivas USA’s U.S. Soccer Foundation Humanitarian of the Year for his charity work off the field.

2007: Started all 23 matches he played, notching a goal and an assist. Became the first Chivas USA player to appear in an MLS All-Star game when he played 90 minutes in a 2-0 win over Celtic.

2006: Named Gatorade MLS Rookie of the Year after finishing third in league – and first among field players – in minutes played, starting each of Chivas USA’s 32 matches. Also led all MLS rookies in goals scored, with six, and added four assists. Successfully made the transition to defense, after playing primarily as an attacker in college.
