Indoor Soccer News: MISL Names Player of the Week for Weeks 6 & 7

Wave Defender Joe Hammes named for Week 6, Blast forward Machel Millwood for Week 7.

Week 6

The Major Indoor Soccer League announced on Tuesday, December 13, that Milwaukee Wave defender Joe Hammes had been named the league’s Player of the Week for the sixth week of the 2011-12 season. Hammes had a seven-point night as the Wave maintained their undefeated start to the season, rallying from an early deficit to defeat the Rochester Lancers on Saturday night.

Hammes helped the Wave climb out of a seven-point hole against the Lancers, scoring their first goal of the game and then capping an 11-0 run to end the first quarter with his second 3-point goal of the season. He then added a pair of assists, while also blocking a pair of shots as the Wave moved to 6-0 this season.

With 19 points this season, November’s MISL Defender of the Month is tied for the league lead among defenders in points and assists (5). Saturday’s seven-point game was Hammes’ second of the season, with the 32-year-old recording a hat trick against Norfolk on November 19.

Other players considered for the weekly award included the Missouri CometsGeison, who took the league lead in points after scoring nine points in a pair of Comets’ victories this past weekend. The Brazilian’s 3-point goal with 32 seconds to play lifted his side to a 12-10 victory against Baltimore, and moved him onto 40 points this season, more points than he tallied a season ago.

Syracuse defender Jeff Hughes, who is tied with Hammes for the league-lead among defenders with 19 points, was also nominated after his 3-point goal gave the Silver Knights a 12-9 victory against the Baltimore Blast.

Week 7

On Tuesday, December 20, the MISL announced that Baltimore Blast forward Machel Millwood had been named the league’s Player of the Week for the seventh week of the 2011-12 season. Millwood had 11 points as the Blast took a pair of victories during the weekend, bolstering their lead at the top of the Eastern Division.

Milwood had a goal and an assist in the Blast’s 17-9 victory against the Missouri Comets at 1st Mariner Arena on Friday night. His second-quarter goal put the Blast ahead 6-4, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Then on Sunday afternoon Millwood had an eight-point game to lead the Blast to a 19-8 victory against the Norfolk SharX. With the Blast trailing in the second quarter, Millwood’s back-to-back goals, including a 3-pointer, gave his side the lead before he completed his hat trick in the third quarter.

Millwood moved into a tie for fourth place in the league at 30 points with his pair of strong performances, and is a contender for the league’s Offensive Player of the Month having tallied 20 points in the month of December.

Other players considered for the weekly award included Norfolk’s Matt Delicate, who scored the first hat trick in franchise history in the SharX’s loss to the Blast. The Rochester Lancer’s Andrew Hoxie also had a good return to action after an injury, scoring five points in his side’s 18-14 win against Syracuse that moved the Lancers back into second place in the Eastern Division. Missouri’s Tiguinho also merited consideration, recording a five-point night in his return to the Comets’ lineup against Baltimore.

The MISL season continues with a pair of games this week, with the Norfolk SharX travelling to face the Rochester Lancers at 7 p.m. on Thursday night at Blue Cross Arena. After taking a victory against in-state rival Syracuse this past weekend, the Lancers are aiming for a win to remain in second place in the Eastern Division

On Friday night the Syracuse Silver Knights, looking to bounce back from their last outing, host the Missouri Comets at the Oncenter and will hope to earn some revenge for the defeat the Comets handed them in their first meeting of the season.

Both of the weekend’s games will be streamed live on MISL Live, with live game stats available on PointStreak.com.
