Indoor Soccer News: Milwaukee Wave’s Nick Perera Named Final MISL Player of the Week for 2012-2013

Had 12 points as Wave took three victories in final week of regular season

On Tuesday, March 5, the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) announced that Milwaukee Wave forward Nick Perera has been named the league’s Player of the Week for the final week of the 2012-13 season. Perera scored five goals and added two assists as the Wave entered the 2013 MISL Playoffs on a high with three consecutive victories.

Perera had two goals and an assist in the Wave’s 12-8 victory against Syracuse Silver Knights last Wednesday, opening the scoring a little over four minutes into the contest before assisting JP Rodrigues’ goal to give his side a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Perera added another goal early in the second quarter, and it proved to be the game-winner as the Wave held off the Silver Knights’ late rally.

Perera then repeated the same feat against the same team on Saturday night, scoring late in the first and second quarter, his second goal of the night giving the Wave their first lead of the game in a 10-6 win against Syracuse. He capped his strong week with a goal against Wichita Wings as the Wave edged to an 8-6 win.

Milwaukee goalkeeper Marcel Feenstra joined Perera on the Team of the Week after picking up a pair of wins with a 7.00 goals-against average. Feenstra was at his best in Syracuse last Wednesday, recording 23 saves as the Wave held off the Silver Knights’ second-half rally, and he also recorded 18 saves in Milwaukee’s 8-6 win against Wichita.

The Missouri Comets also had a pair of players named to the Team of the Week as defender Ryan Junge and midfielder Vahid Assadpour were honored after their side’s 8-6 overtime win against Chicago Soul. Assadpour scored twice, and Junge had a pair of assists, as the Comets locked up the No. 3 seed in the MISL Playoffs and a series with the Wave this week.

Chicago’s Carlos Farias and Carlos Muñoz rounded out the honorees, with Farias having a seven-point night in the Soul’s playoff-clinching 17-6 win against Syracuse last Friday. Muñoz also shined for the Soul, finishing with a hat trick, as the expansion side capped its inaugural season with a berth in the playoffs.

The 2012-13 MISL Playoffs opened on Tuesday night as the No. 1 seed Baltimore Blast defeated the No. 4 seed Chicago Soul to open their semifinal series at The Odeum in Chicago. The Blast then host the Soul on Saturday night at 1st Mariner Arena at 7:35 p.m. ET for Game 2, with both teams geared up to compete for a place in the MISL Championship Series after splitting the season series 2-2.

The No. 2 seed Milwaukee Wave and No. 3 seed Missouri Comets also finished their regular-season series tied 2-2, and the two teams will meet for Game 1 of their semifinal series on Thursday night at 8:35 p.m. at the Independence Events Center in Missouri. The action then shifts to Milwaukee’s U.S. Cellular Arena on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. ET as the second participant in the championship series is determined.
