San Diego Soccer News: San Diego SOCKERS Re-Sign Vista Native “Chiky” Luna

North County Soccer Star Continues his Sockers Career for 2010-2011 season

The San Diego Sockers announced the signing of veteran midfielder Miguel “Chiky” Luna to a one-year contract. Terms of the deal were not announced.

“’Chiky’ is one of the real leaders of this team and a clutch goal scorer,” said Sockers general manager John Kentera, “We couldn’t be happier to have the ‘pride of Vista’ back in our starting midfield.”

A creative midfielder and power-play specialist, Miguel ‘Chiky’ Luna was a major factor in the Sockers’ championship season in 2009-2010. Scoring 15 goals in 15 games, Luna regularly patrolled midfield for San Diego as well as working the wings on the Sockers’ power play.

A clutch scorer, Luna netted the game-winner with 19 seconds remaining in San Diego’s 6-5 PASL-Pro North American Championship semi-final against Mexico City. His knack for key goals continued all season, including five second-half tallies in a comeback 11-7 win over Vitesse Dallas for a berth in the U.S. Open Cup finals. Luna also scored the game-winner in sudden death for a 5-4 overtime win in Edmonton.

According to the Del Mar Times on March 12, 2010, “The Professional Arena Soccer League North American Championship semi-finals concluded on Friday with a 6-5 victory by the Sockers over the Sidekicks of Estado De Mexico. The victory came after a game-winning goal by Miguel “Chiky” Luna with 19 seconds left in the game.”

Chiky was born in Los Angeles but quickly moved to San Diego, growing up playing soccer for Derek Armstrong’s San Diego Nomads, where he won three national titles at the youth club level. A 1997 graduate of Vista High School, Luna was CIF player of the year his senior season. He was a four-year scholarship athlete at the University of Portland before beginning his professional career with the San Diego Flash in 2001.

Luna, 30, and his wife Cecilia recently celebrated the birth of their first-born son Santi.
