College Soccer News: Maryland and Florida State Top NSCAA NCAA Division I Polls

In the exciting race to the ultimate goal of participating in the championship, here is the lastest in the NSCAA NCAA Division 1 Polls.

Undefeated teams top the ranks of the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I polls for October 2. The University of Maryland leads the men’s rankings with an 8-0-1 (W-L-T) record following their 4-0 win over Georgia State on September 24 and a 3-2 victory over College of Charleston on September 29. In women’s soccer, Florida State leads the pack with a perfect 11-0-0 record after defeating North Carolina (1-0) and North Carolina State (2-0) over the past week.

The NSCAA rankings provide a week-to-week comparison of college soccer programs in six different divisions, from NCAA Division I to Junior College Divisions.

While these rankings are not an indicator of a program’s eligibility for selection to championship competition, they do provide a comparison of schools that could compete for titles.

The Terrapins’ men have rattled off some impressive victories so far this season, which helped them garner 21 first-place votes and 573 total points in balloting. In addition to the 4-0 win over Georgia State, Maryland posted big wins over California (6-0) and Boston College (4-0).

The team’s only blemish was a 2-2 draw in double overtime against western powerhouse UCLA (No. 8) early in the season. The Terrapins will take on Virginia in a home match on Friday, October 5, in a match that will be broadcast on FOX Soccer Channel.

Florida State’s women’s program picked up all 33 first-place votes for a total of 825 points in the most recent poll. The Seminoles have only allowed three goals in competition, two of those coming in their opener against Minnesota on August 17.

The only other team to dent the back of the net against Florida State has been Cal State Fullerton in early September. Florida State will take on Clemson in a home match on Thursday, October 4.

The West Coast has shown its strength in the women’s rankings, with three schools from California in the top ten. Not surprisingly, Stanford and UCLA sit at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. A Dark horse in the race is San Diego State University (SDSU), who this week moved up to No. 10 in the poll after a solid 3-0 win over Nevada in their Mountain West Conference opener on September 28. The Aztecs are 10-1-1, with their only loss coming against Stanford. SDSU will look to move up again when they take on Boise State in Boise, Idaho, on Friday, October 5.
